If that’s where things stand, the first question to ask is: what did the “remediation” look like?

🚨 Mold remediation is almost completely unregulated in the U.S. Only 8 states require any licensing or certification for mold remediators, and only 2 require remediators to follow the industry standard of care.

Someone could go to bed tonight, wake up tomorrow, and call themselves a mold remediator.

❌No training.

❌No certification.

❌No required standards.

Mold was found. Remediation was done. But someone in the home is still sick. Now what?

There are a lot of reasons why symptoms can persist even after mold remediation is done. Some have to do with how the remediation was performed. Some have to do with what happened after. And some have nothing to do with mold at all.

Our Executive Director Kendra Seymour walks through 7 questions to ask yourself when you’re still not feeling well after remediation.

Homeowners and renters across 48 states have already shared their experiences with mold inspections and remediations. Their responses are building something that has never existed before. The first national picture of what consumers actually go through in this industry.

But we need yours too.

Stay and fix it, or start over somewhere new?

If you've dealt with mold in your home, you've probably asked yourself this. Nik and Olivia Stophel did too.

It started on moving day. The movers pulled out the fridge without fully turning off the water line, and within 24 hours, water had spread under the floors, behind the cabinets, and past the living room.

That leak was only the beginning. As they opened up walls, they found more water damage, other problem areas, and mold in places they never expected. They had every reason to walk away.

For them, the deciding factor was knowing what's behind the walls.
A different house might look perfect, but you won't know what's hiding in it until you look.

Today, Nik is a certified mold inspector, and his advice is the same no matter which home you choose: get a thorough inspection, even if you think you've already found every problem.

Before you call anyone about a leak, grab your phone.

When Nik Stophel found bubbling sheetrock in his home, the first thing he did was set his phone on a tripod and start recording. He filmed the bubbling, the water spraying out, and every piece of drywall he pulled back.

When the insurance adjuster arrived, he told Nik that the footage made a huge difference. Without it, they would have been fighting the claim.

Water damage dries out, and once materials are removed, the evidence goes with them. Documenting it right away can be the difference between a covered claim and a fight.

When you see water damage, do you think "mold"?

Most people don't. A stained ceiling or a bubbling wall looks like a repair job: patch it, paint it, move on.

But the damage you can see is often only a small part of it. Water can keep spreading under floors, behind cabinets, and inside walls. The mold clock starts the moment materials get wet, not when you find it.
