In the Netherlands , pepper spray is banned for civilians, so to give victims a way to defend themselves, an unusual alternative has appeared: the X-Marker, nicknamed the “Smurf spray”.

Instead of an irritant gas, it sprays a highly resistant blue ink that covers the attacker’s face and clothes.

The stain will remain visible for several days, even after multiple washes, making it easier for police to identify the suspect.

It is designed more to leave a lasting mark than to neutralize the attacker, and is sold as a legal self-defense tool.

The product sparks debate: some see it as an effective way to quickly identify a suspect, while others argue it doesn’t replace real protection in a dangerous situation.

Today, the “Smurf spray” remains one of the most unusual self-defense devices developed in the Netherlands.
