Loving from God’s Heart
As believers, we are called to be people after God’s own heart. That means our hearts should reflect His heart, our love should reflect His love, and our compassion should reflect His compassion. If God can extend mercy, grace, and acceptance to imperfect people, then we must ask ourselves: are we truly pursuing His heart if we continually reject the very people He is trying to receive?
There’s a maturity in God that goes beyond shouting, titles, gifts, and outward appearances. True maturity is revealed in how we treat the people we struggle to like. The hard truth is this: God does not stop loving people just because we have an issue with them. Heaven does not revoke someone’s calling because of our personal opinion. Many times, the very people we overlook, dismiss, or avoid are still chosen vessels in the hands of God.
We are taught to “love your neighbor as yourself.” That command was never limited to people who think like us, act like us, agree with us, or make us comfortable. Love is tested most when it is extended toward imperfect people. Every one of us has flaws, weaknesses, and moments where we have fallen short, yet God still receives us with mercy.
Imagine if God treated us the way we sometimes treat others. What if He withheld grace because of our attitude? What if He ignored our prayers because of our failures? What if He disqualified us because of the mistakes people remember about us? None of us would stand. Yet God, in His compassion, continues to forgive, restore, use, and love us anyway.
Sometimes we become so focused on people’s shortcomings that we miss the gift of God inside of them. We judge their personality, their past, their immaturity, or even our own discomfort with them. Yet God sees beyond what we see. He sees potential where we see problems. He sees purpose where we see imperfection.
Receiving people into the family of God requires spiritual maturity. It requires humility. It requires us to crucify pride, bitterness, comparison, jealousy, offense, and personal preference. Everyone in the Kingdom is growing somewhere. Some people are still healing. Some are still learning. Some are still overcoming wounds we know nothing about. Growth takes place in an atmosphere of love, not rejection.
If we are truly after God’s heart, then we cannot allow our emotions, opinions, or personal offenses to override His command to love. God’s heart is for restoration, reconciliation, and redemption. As His people, our hearts should desire the same.
Therefore, let us render unto others the same grace, mercy, patience, and love that God continually renders unto us. For none of us were worthy on our own, yet God still welcomed us into His family. Let us not exclude, reject, or overlook those whom God has chosen to embrace. Instead, let us walk in spiritual maturity, remembering that love is the true evidence of a heart surrendered to God.
This does not mean we ignore wisdom or boundaries, but it does mean we refuse to let our personal feelings become a wall that keeps others from experiencing the love of Christ. The same grace we desire for ourselves must be the grace we extend to others.
God’s family was never built on perfection. It was built on mercy.
So today, ask yourself:
Who have I silently excluded?
Who have I judged unfairly?
Who have I refused to receive because of my own thoughts or feelings?
Then remember this: the same God who accepted you is calling you to accept others.
Because love is not proven by how we treat the people we enjoy.
Love is proven by how we treat the people we struggle to understand.
