Eunice Haigler is a community activist, local historian, and organizer in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area whose instrumental efforts helped establish Juneteenth as an official state and federal holiday.

Around 2015, Eunice began organizing local Juneteenth celebrations in Fredericksburg. She later petitioned Delegate Josh Cole to introduce legislation recognizing Juneteenth as an official state holiday in Virginia. Her advocacy contributed to the legislation’s passage in 2020.

Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans while honoring the rich history, resilience, and contributions of Black communities. It is a day of reflection, education, and celebration of freedom, progress, and equality for all.

The Eunice Haigler Community Service Award🏆, presented alongside the Forrest Parker Sr. Advocacy Award, is nominated and presented by the Act-Enough community organization as part of the regional Planning District 16 (PD16) Juneteenth Celebration Committee.

Connunity canvas is deeply grateful for being recognized at this year's Juneteenth, 2026 for the recognition of our founder, Javonne Kirby, and her vision for Community Canvas. This honor celebrates not only the work being done today, but also the lasting legacy being built for future generations. A busy weekend for us with the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank and Fredericksburg Area Museum

This weekend of history, conversation, and connection with the Slave Dwelling Project. We look forward to experiencing living history, visit historic sites, and hear stories often left out of the traditional narrative.

THIS WEEKEND! The Slave Dwelling Project is coming to the Fredericksburg region September 11–13 for a powerful weekend of history, conversation and connection.

Throughout the weekend, experience living history, take part in meaningful conversations, visit historic sites, hear stories often left out of the traditional narrative and learn directly from the Slave Dwelling Project.

Many events are FREE and open to the public, with some programs requiring advance registration.

Food security is just as important to us as creating a space where we can all come together, connect, create, and grow as an art community.

Appreciation corner Fridays!

As we come into our “Ber” months, we’re looking ahead to a busy and meaningful remainder of the year, including an upcoming exhibit in October for Homeless Awareness Month and our first fundraiser as we head into the holiday season.

But before we get too far ahead, we want to pause and take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible community partners who have supported, uplifted, and recognized our work throughout the year. ❤️

First up: Micah Ecumenical Ministries

Back in April, MICAH Ministries recognized and presented our founder, Javonne Kirby with the Drum Major for Justice Award.

Presented annually by MICAH Ecumenical Ministries during their community Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Service, this award honors local leaders who exemplify Dr. King’s commitment to servant leadership, justice, and mercy.

We are incredibly grateful to MICAH Ministries for seeing, affirming, and celebrating the work being done in our community. This recognition is not just an honor for our founder — it is a reflection of the collective work of everyone who continues to stand alongside us in the pursuit of justice, dignity, and compassion.

Thank you, MICAH, for being a community partner and for believing in the work. We appreciate you!

Come spend some time with us at Fredericksburg Baptist Church from 12:00–4:00 PM. Stop by, grab some art supplies, and make something! You can paint, draw, experiment with different materials, or see what inspires you.

No experience is needed, and you don’t have to be an “artist” to join in. This is a place to be creative, meet people, and enjoy time together in the community.
