On October 15, ACA Regional Activity Council (RAC) Chair and NJ State Director Bill Causo was invited by the Assembly Tourism committee chair to testify as part of a larger boating safety hearing.

Bill was among the invited guests testifying at hearing on boating safety. He discussed kayaking 101, ACA instructors, and curriculum focused on education and training, and wearing personal flotation devices (PFDs) as means to reduce paddling fatalities.

The ACA is proud to be a prominent voice for paddling safety and are grateful for the ACA members, volunteers, and instructors who support the ACA’s mission through the promotion of education, instruction, and life jacket use!

Congratulations to Melinda Moree on being named ACA Instructor of the Month!

Melinda started kayaking at 44 because “I didn’t want to die without having learned to kayak.” Fifteen years later, Melinda is an ACA Level 4 Open Water Coastal Kayaking Instructor Trainer Candidate and a Level 3 Surf Kayaking Instructor Trainer, teaching along the Oregon and Washington coasts and around the Columbia River Gorge.

Melinda’s philosophy: help paddlers read the environment, make decisions, and adapt. And make the circle bigger while doing it.

Though we are late posting, we wanted to offer our most sincere congratulations to the USA Canoe Kayak Team on a great showing at the 2026 Olympic Hopes Regatta in Bratislava, Slovakia!

20 U15-U17 athletes from the United States raced against top international competition, with a stacked field of almost 800 athletes from 40+ countries competing. Malia Terry-Voisard delivered stand out results, reaching three A finals: 4th in the C1 200, 5th in the C1 500, and 6th in the C1 5000.

Well done also to Zygmond Farmer (5th, U16 C1 5000), Anna Cashion/Johanna Payne (8th, U17 C2 500), Anna Cashion (7th, U17 C1 500 B final), and Ben Watters (6th, U17 K1 1000 B final).

Thank you to the coaches, staff, and families who supported the team. The future is bright for sprint athletes in the USA!

Meet ACA Instructor of the Month, Carly Bascom!

As an ACA Level 1 Kayak Instructor with the New England Healing Sports Association (NEHSA), Carly helps create meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities to experience the joy, freedom, and connection of being on the water.

Through more than 300 adaptive kayak sessions each summer, Carly and the NEHSA team help paddlers build confidence, discover new skills, and experience something everyone deserves: the opportunity to explore by kayak.

“Kayaking has become so much more than a hobby to me. It has become a way to create connection, build confidence, and open doors to experiences that everyone deserves the opportunity to have.”

Did you know the ACA offers Advanced Communications Workshops (ACW)?

ACWs are designed for instructors, outfitters, recreation program managers, trip leaders, and all others who want to seamlessly integrate people with speech and language impairments, hearing impairments or deafness, visual impairments or blindness into paddlesports programs.

ACWs provide a basic understanding of disabilities that affect communication and provide a toolbox of knowledge, techniques, and strategies to enable successful integration. Current ACA Instructors will earn the Advanced Communications Endorsement upon successful completion. All other ACA members who are not certified ACA instructors will earn a Certificate of Completion upon successful demonstration of all criteria.

During the course, participants took turns wearing blacked out glasses to emulate working with learners who have a vision impairment.

They started with land-based teaching practice and progressed into water-based instruction and guiding.

The noise limiting earmuffs reflect practicing teaching to learners that have a hearing impairment.

The ACA Board of Directors election for the 2027–2028 term opened at the beginning of the month!

ACA members ages 18 and older will have received an email notification with voting instructions on September 1. This election will determine who will fill two At-Large Director seats and one Independent Director seat.

We appreciate your participation in this important member benefit and helping strengthen the ACA community!

There are A LOT of personal flotation devices (PFDs) on the market and each one comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks.

Identifying which PFDs are best for the environment and paddlecrafts you paddle in is one of the many things you will learn during an ACA course.

Paddling with a pro will improve your paddling, make you more comfortable and ensure you are having as much fun as possible on the water.

Moments from the 2026 Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships ✨

USA Canoe/Kayak Team’s sprint and paracanoe athletes have concluded a memorable week of racing at the 2026 Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships on Poznań’s Malta Lake, with a World Best Time and World Championship title for Blake Haxton in the Men’s VL2 200m event, a bronze medal for Nevin Harrison in the Women’s C1 200m event, and more personal and national record setting results.

Beyond the results, it was encouraging to see the USA Canoe/Kayak Team’s sprint and paracanoe athletes competing and supporting one another as one unified team throughout the week in Poznań.
