Tree Fredericksburg Tree Fredericksburg is a non profit dedicated to restore the urban canopy in Fredericksburg Virginia.

Goals and Objectives

• Partner and coordinate with the City of Fredericksburg Public Works Dept; Planning Dept; Parks and Recreation Dept; and Fredericksburg Educational Institutions to develop a plan to restore our urban forest

• Recruit and utilize volunteers to plant new urban trees and maintain these trees for first two years after planting

• Establish a detailed Tree Plan for the City of

Fredericksburg including a long range economic plan for restoring the urban forest

• Conduct a tree inventory of city trees

• Raise money through grants and fundraising events

• Educate and offer training in proper tree care to volunteers and citizens

• Educate the public on the benefits of trees

• Preserve the natural forested areas and greenways within the city

• Plant 10,000 trees in our city over the next 15 years using both public and private efforts.

Incoming students from the University of Mary Washington helped mulch trees at Maury playground this week with Tree Fredericksburg. NEST 2026 is a program at UMW designed to help incoming students learn about Fredericksburg and help our community. What a wonderful time we had getting to know these great students.

🌱We wanted to let you know about a Permaculture Design Certification program being offered through UMC's Continuing and Professional Studies department this fall.

The University of Mary Washington has partnered with the Shenandoah Permaculture Institute to bring their Permaculture Design Certificate program right here to the Fredericksburg region. This program was previously offered in Richmond and Harrisonburg only.

This is a hands-on, ethics-based program that covers 72 hours of workshops across four fall weekends. It blends field trips, collaborative design projects, and practical training in regenerative agriculture, water conservation, soil management, and applied permaculture.

The program was designed for teachers, sustainability professionals, landscape designers, farmers, and anyone ready to turn gardens, farms, neighborhoods, or cities into thriving, sustainable ecosystems.

Sept 18–20 · Oct 3–4 · Oct 24–25 · Nov 7–8

Is your yard ready for what's coming this summer?

New data from NOAA shows that nearly 55% of the U.S. is entering summer in moderate to extreme drought — the most widespread early-season dryness in four years. The record-warm winter and volatile spring forced many trees to bud out early, get hit by late frosts, and push out secondary buds- burning through energy reserves they desperately need to survive summer heat, pests, and disease.

Here's a quick homeowner checklist to protect your landscape:
✅ Push a screwdriver 6 inches into soil under your tree's canopy. Can't get it in? Your trees need deep-root watering.
✅ Hold off on new planting or major lawn renovation — drought makes establishment nearly impossible right now.
✅ Delay non-essential pruning (open wounds are harder to heal in heat).
✅ Add 3–4 inches of organic mulch around tree bases in a donut shape (not piled against the trunk).

Warning signs to watch for: canopy thinning, leaf scorch, patchy lawn, compacted soil, or premature browning.

A certified arborist can spot hidden hazards like brittle limbs or early infestations before they become expensive emergencies.

This Saturday: get your hands dirty learning how to grow your own fruit trees from cuttings and seeds.

This lecture, sponsored by Tree Fredericksburg, will review different methods of propagating trees. The focus will be on trees and woody shrubs. A recommended cloning technique using fig tree cuttings will be demonstrated and can be used for most fruit trees and hardwoods. The presentation and hands-on session will last about an hour.

🌿 Native plant lovers, this one's for you! Join us Saturday, June 13 for a two-part Garden Tour in Downtown Fredericksburg!

9 AM–Noon: Tour a brand-new native plant garden — a half-acre city lot transformed from all-grass to a gorgeous oasis complete with a dry creek bed, meadow, bridges, and arbors. This half acre garden in the city has just been planted this spring with mostly one gallon plants from the Tree Fredericksburg Native Plant Festival. Designer Anne Little and the homeowner will be on hand to answer questions!

1–4 PM: Explore a stunning mature woodland native garden in the heart of the city, featuring 40+ trees on just 1/3 acre, a goldfish pond, stone paths, and more.

Tree Fredericksburg Tree Stewards and James Monroe High School students joined forces to mulch and care for the trees on the James Monroe High School campus on Tuesday, May 26 for the Ceili Leahy Day Project. James Monroe High school students have helped plant over 350 trees on their campus since 2012. Many of the trees have now reached height of over 30 feet and are now providing students with many environmental benefits -clean air, cooling, noise reduction, wildlife habitat and beauty.

Join us Tuesday, June 2nd as the amazingly intelligent Lisa Benoit of Wren & Sparrow fame teaches us everything we need to know about bluebirds and how to welcome them into your world!
