WHO WAS YOUR BIG?

Maybe you never had one.

And maybe there's a child in our community right now wondering when theirs is going to show up.

That's what makes the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Fredericksburg so important.

Being a "Big" isn't about having all the answers. It isn't about being perfect. And it certainly isn't about swooping in and changing someone's life overnight.

It's about showing up.

Again.

And again.

Until a young person realizes:

“This person really is here for me.”

That's how trust begins.

A conversation. A basketball game. Help with homework. A shared interest. A laugh. Someone asking how school went—and actually wanting to hear the answer.

Individually, those moments may not seem very big at all.

Put enough of them together, though, and they can become something enormous in a young person's life.

That's the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Fredericksburg—creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships that help young people reach their potential.

And here's something worth knowing:

There are children in our community already waiting to be matched with a Big.

Not necessarily waiting for somebody extraordinary.

Maybe just somebody willing to be there.

❤️ Could that somebody be you?

You might shoot hoops together.

Go for a walk.

Work on a project.

Talk about school.

Share something you're interested in.

Or simply spend a couple of hours together and listen.

Because sometimes what makes someone important in our lives isn't one enormous thing they did.

It's all the little times they showed up.

🇺🇸 **National Nonprofit Day — The Work Doesn't End When the Day Does!** 🦌

We may be a day late recognizing **National Nonprofit Day**, but at **Fredericksburg Elks #875**, serving our community isn't something that happens on just one day of the year.

It's what Elks do. ❤️

Throughout the year, our members and volunteers give their time, energy, and resources to support **veterans, children, families, students, schools, local organizations, and neighbors who need a helping hand.**

Sometimes it's a scholarship.

Sometimes it's a backpack filled with school supplies.

Sometimes it's helping our veterans.

Sometimes it's supporting a local family or community organization.

And sometimes it's simply asking:

**"What can we do to help?"**

That's what being an Elk is all about.

National Nonprofit Day was yesterday, but today seems like just as good a day to say **THANK YOU** to every member, volunteer, community partner, and supporter who helps Fredericksburg Elks #875 continue making a difference in our community.

⚠️ **IMPORTANT FRAUD ALERT — PLEASE SHARE** ⚠️

We want to make our members — and our fellow Elks Lodges — aware of a recent increase in **fraudulent emails pretending to come from Elks leadership.**

These emails may appear to come from an **Exalted Ruler, Lodge officer, or even someone higher up within the Elks organization.** The scammers often ask an individual member to purchase **gift cards, send money, make a payment, or buy something for a supposed Lodge or Elks project.**

🚨 **PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS OF UNEXPECTED INDIVIDUAL EMAIL REQUESTS.**

Fredericksburg Elks #875 **does not send individual members unexpected emails asking them to purchase gift cards, send money, or buy items on behalf of a Lodge officer or Lodge project.**

That does **not** mean our Lodge will never ask our members to support a fundraiser, charitable project, or donation drive.

When we are seeking donations or support for a legitimate project, **the request will come through our normal Lodge communications in a way you recognize as being from Fredericksburg Elks #875.**

Scammers can use the **names and titles of people you know and trust** to make their messages appear legitimate. Just because an email says it is from your Exalted Ruler or another Elks leader does not mean that person actually sent it.

**WHEN IN DOUBT — VERIFY BEFORE YOU ACT.**

Do not reply to a suspicious email, click its links, or use the phone number or contact information contained in it. Instead, contact your Lodge directly or reach out to the person using a phone number or email address you already know.

Please consider sharing this warning with your own membership. These scams are not necessarily limited to one Lodge, and the more our members know what to look for, the harder it becomes for scammers to take advantage of the trust we have in one another.

In Memory of Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel

The members of Fredericksburg Elks #875 extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, fellow firefighters, and coworkers of Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel, who tragically lost his life in an off-duty incident. He was only 24 years old.

There are moments when words simply do not seem enough.

A family has lost someone they love. Friends have lost someone who was part of their lives. And a Fire and Rescue family that spends its days answering the call for others is now grieving one of its own.

Today, we simply want our neighbors at Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management —and everyone who knew and loved Mason—to know that you are not grieving alone.

Our community sees you.

Our community mourns with you.

And our hearts are with you in the difficult days ahead.

To the firefighters, EMTs, dispatchers, law enforcement officers, and other first responders who worked beside Mason and who continue to serve while carrying this loss, please know how deeply your community appreciates you.

And to Mason's family and friends, we offer our heartfelt condolences and hope you find strength in the people surrounding you and in the memories of a young man who chose to serve his community.

Gwyneth's Gift Foundation

Imagine this for a moment.

You're at work. At a ballgame. At dinner. Maybe you're standing beside someone you love.

Suddenly, the person next to you collapses.

Would you know what to do?

For most of us, that's a situation we hope we never face. But if it happens, the person who makes the difference may not be a doctor, nurse or paramedic.

It may simply be the person who is standing there.

That is where the story of Gwyneth's Gift Foundation begins.

Gwyneth Morgan Griffin was just 13 years old when she passed away in 2012. Her parents, Joel and Jennifer Griffin, took an unimaginable loss and turned their grief into a mission: helping create communities where ordinary people are prepared and confident enough to act when someone's life is on the line.

Their advocacy helped lead to Gwyneth's Law, passed in Virginia in 2013. The law brought AED placement to Virginia public schools and Hands-Only CPR education to teachers and students. The Foundation followed in 2015, carrying that mission directly into our communities.

And look at what one young girl's legacy has become.

By the end of 2025:

❤️ More than 27,000 people trained in Hands-Only CPR and AED use
⚡ More than 150 AEDs placed across Virginia
❤️ 13 lives reported saved

That final number carries special meaning.

Gwyneth was 13.

Today, Gwyneth's Gift works to create what they call a "Culture of Action"—communities where people aren't simply hoping someone else will know what to do. They're educated, confident and empowered to step forward themselves.

And maybe that's the part of this story that connects so strongly with what we've been learning through our Community Spotlights.

Community isn't only about being there for one another. Sometimes it's about being prepared for the moment when someone truly needs you.

One person learns CPR.

Another business receives an AED.

Someone recognizes an emergency.

Someone steps forward instead of stepping back.

And somewhere, another person gets the chance to go home to the people who love them.

That's quite a gift.
