Can Artificial Intelligence help improve the quality of early childhood education?
A recent study explored how Large Language Models (LLMs) can serve as assessment teammates for educators by analyzing teacher-child interactions in preschool classrooms.
Researchers analyzed over 370 hours of classroom interactions across 105 preschool classrooms and found that AI systems achieved up to 88% agreement with human expert evaluators while making the assessment process up to 18 times more efficient. These findings suggest that AI could help schools move beyond annual evaluations toward more continuous monitoring, feedback, and improvement efforts.
While AI will never replace educators, studies like this demonstrate how technology can support teachers, strengthen professional development, and ultimately improve learning experiences for young children.
