Yesterday at the Heartwood Seed Project, we traded our garden gloves for shovels—and there was no shortage of sweat, mud, dirt, and digging! 🌱💪

A lot of the work that makes a garden grow happens beneath the surface. Yesterday was a perfect example.

We dug and filled multiple trenches, including one for the electrical hookup for our well pump. For the past year, we've relied on a generator to power the pump that brings water to our fields. Now, we're taking an important step toward a more permanent and sustainable solution.

We also dug a drainage trench around our new barn to help protect the building and manage water as we continue developing the project.

It wasn't glamorous work. It wasn't easy work. But it was important work!

And that's one of the things we love about Heartwood: growing food isn't just about what happens above the ground. It takes people willing to dig deep, get dirty, move some dirt, and lay the groundwork for something that will bless our community for years to come.

A huge THANK YOU to the volunteers who showed up yesterday and put in the sweat, strength, and hard work! Your hands are helping Heartwood take root—and helping us grow fresh food, cultivate community, and care for God's creation.

And the work is never done! Mark your calendars and join us for our next Work Day on Monday, August 31!

Come ready to get your hands dirty, lend a hand, and be part of what God is growing at Heartwood. You don't have to be an expert gardener—just bring yourself and a willingness to work!

There are days when you stand, look around, and just smile because you can see the faith, hard work, and hope taking root.

This week was one of those weeks.

When we planted our berry bushes just 16 months ago, we dreamed about what they might become. Today, those little plants have already given us an incredible harvest.

So far this year, we've harvested:
🍓 50 pounds of strawberries
🫐 24 pounds of blueberries
🖤 5 pounds of blackberries
❤️ 5 pounds of raspberries

And the raspberries are already sending up new canes for next year's fruit. It's a reminder that even while we're celebrating today's harvest, tomorrow's is already being prepared.

The garden continues to surprise us with its abundance. We've harvested nearly 150 pounds of zucchini and yellow squash, the peppers and tomatoes are finally beginning to ripen, and the melons are growing bigger every day. Every walk through the rows brings something new to celebrate.

But the harvest isn't the only thing growing.

This week we also finished the trenching and drainage around the concrete pad for our future building. It may not be as colorful as berries or tomatoes, but it's just as important. Every shovel of dirt and every load of gravel is another step toward creating a place where people can gather, learn, share seeds, grow food, and build community.

A special thank you to the generous donor who provided 50 tons of gravel that made this milestone possible. Your gift is helping lay the foundation for what comes next, and we are deeply grateful!

The Heartwood Seed Project has never been just about growing food. It's about cultivating hope, stewarding the land, sharing what we've been given, and building a community rooted in service. Every seed planted, every w**d pulled, every harvest shared, and every helping hand reminds us why this work matters.

Hands in the dirt, hearts together in mission. 🌱💚

Thank you for walking this journey with us—whether you've volunteered, donated, prayed, or simply cheered us on. You're part of this story, and we can't wait to see what the next week—and the next season—will bring.

The best is still growing.

Good news: the Heartwood Seed Project garden is thriving!
Even better news: there are still plenty of w**ds that need reminding of who is in charge. 😉🌿

🌱 Update from the Heartwood Seed Project: 🌱

Apparently the garden didn't get the memo that it's only a little over a year old. 😄

This week, we brought in our first harvest of blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries—and I'm still in awe. These plants have only been in the ground a little over a year, yet they're already thriving! We harvested a quart of each berry, plus an incredible 25 pounds of zucchini and yellow squash.

It's amazing what can happen with a little patience, a lot of care, and God's provision. Every harvest is a reminder that growth often happens quietly... right up until you're wondering what to do with 25 pounds of squash. (If you see us sneaking zucchini onto your porch, no you didn't. 😉)

Thanks be to God for this bountiful harvest! We're so grateful to witness His faithfulness through every seed planted and every fruit gathered.

Our next Work day and Harvest day is coming up soon! Monday, July 13 9AM-2PM. Be on the lookout for more information!

What a beautiful day at the Heartwood Seed Project! 🌱☀️

Today, we were honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Clarence and our District Superintendent, Rev. Lindsey, as they toured the incredible progress that's been made over the past year.

Just look at what has been accomplished:
💧 Installed a well pump
🚰 Added four water hydrants throughout the field
🦌 Erected a perimeter fence to keep wildlife from enjoying our harvest before we do
🫐 Planted hundreds of berry bushes
🌳 Cleared land for the future orchard
🪵 Removed trees, chipped brush, and moved countless logs (seriously... so many logs!)
🏗️ Poured the concrete slab and dug a trench for a much-anticipated building

None of this happened by accident. It happened because of an amazing community of volunteers who continue to show up—week after week—with willing hands, generous hearts, and a servant's spirit. Whether you spent hours running equipment, planting bushes, hauling brush, swinging a shovel, or simply encouraging others, every contribution mattered. This project is growing because of you!

You are proof that when people come together with a shared purpose, incredible things happen. We are deeply grateful for every volunteer who has invested their time, energy, prayers, and sweat into making this vision a reality.

And don't worry—we're saving plenty of work for the next volunteer day! More details coming soon!😉🌱

Thank you all for helping plant seeds of hope that will bear fruit for years to come. 💚

🌱☀️ The past couple of weeks have kept us busy — and sweaty! Even with the heat, our volunteers continue to show up week after week, and we couldn't be more grateful. Thank you for helping make this project thrive! 💚

Now if the weather forecast would stop playing hard to get and actually deliver the rain we're supposed to get today and tomorrow, that would be great. 🌧️🤞

Despite the heat, we accomplished a lot today:
🌿 The berry rows got a fresh haircut.
🫐 We finished installing the trellis system for the blackberries and raspberries.
🚜 We tackled even more fence installation.

And the growing season is in full swing!

🍓 The next crop of strawberries has bloomed and is growing beautifully.
🌶️ The peppers are flowering.
🍅 Tomatoes are blooming.
🍉 Watermelon is on the move.
🍈 Cantaloupe is growing strong.
🥒 Zucchini and yellow squash are sending out blooms and getting ready to produce.

Every week brings new growth, new challenges, and plenty of reasons to get excited about what's ahead. Here's hoping for some much-needed rain and another productive week at the Heartwood Seed Project! 🌱🌦️

We will be harvesting blueberries in two weeks, if you're interested in harvesting drop a comment below.

What a powerful day at the Heartwood Seed Project.

Despite the scorching heat, more than a dozen incredible volunteers came together with servant hearts and willing hands to move this mission forward. Together, we installed a lower fence to help protect the garden from wildlife, harvested more strawberries — bringing our season total to 20 quarts — and laid out rows for this year’s fruits and vegetables. Today we planted tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini, watermelons, and cantaloupe.

Our amazing crew also finished trenching around the concrete building pad, tackling hard work with determination and joy.

Days like this remind us that the Heartwood Seed Project is about more than growing food — it’s about growing community, purpose, and hope. Thank you to every volunteer who showed up, worked hard, and put their hands in the dirt and their hearts into the mission. 🌱❤️
