💙 Walmart, Thank You for Caring for Our Neighbors!

We are so grateful to our local Walmart stores for their incredible generosity toward The Brisben Center! Your financial donation and the many essential items you’ve provided mean so much to us and the families we serve.

From food and personal hygiene items to cleaning supplies, paper products, plates, bowls, cups, and more, your donations help us keep our shelter stocked with the everyday essentials that make a house feel a little more like home.

It’s partners like you who remind us how much a caring community can accomplish when we come together to support our neighbors.

To every Walmart team member who helped make this generosity possible, thank you for showing up for our families. Your kindness helps us meet essential needs, serve our neighbors with dignity, and move families one step closer to a place they can call home. We couldn’t do this work without community partners like you! 💙

💙 Thank You to REC and Its Generous Members!

The Brisben Center is grateful to have received a grant from The Power of Change, made possible by voluntary donations from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) members.

Thanks to this support, we’ve been able to continue providing food to families experiencing homelessness - nearly half of whom are children. Every meal matters, and every contribution helps make a difference. 🍎

REC members, you can help power the next local grant! Enroll today to make voluntary donations and support nonprofits making a difference in our community.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day

On Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day, we reflect on our nation’s complex history and the many stories that shape it.

Today is an opportunity to honor Indigenous peoples, celebrate their cultures and contributions, and acknowledge the history and experiences of those whose stories have too often gone unheard.

At The Brisben Center, we believe every person deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity. May we honor this day by listening with open hearts, learning from one another, and building a community rooted in understanding, compassion, and respect for all. 💙

🎉 Gloria Burrell Takes the Spotlight! 🎉

What a wonderful sight! Our beloved longtime volunteer, Gloria Burrell, rode proudly in Saturday’s KG Fall Festival parade as the Guest of Honor! ❤️

For more than 25 years, Gloria has shared her time, talents, and heart with The Brisben Center, serving meals and making a difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness.

Now, it’s our turn to celebrate her! We couldn’t be prouder to see Gloria receive this well-deserved recognition in the community she has served for so many years.

Congratulations, Gloria! Thank you for being such a shining example of kindness, generosity, and what it means to serve your neighbors. We’re so lucky to have you in the Brisben Center family! 💙

This World Homeless Day, look beyond the surface - and help a neighbor find a path home.

When you picture homelessness, who do you see?

Someone sleeping on a sidewalk or carrying everything they own.

But that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Homelessness also looks like:

A mother making sure her children get to school while quietly wondering where the family will live next.

A family living in a hotel because they lost their home.

Someone sleeping in their car - and going to work the next morning.

A nurse working a 12-hour shift who has no permanent home to return to.

A person working full-time who still doesn't earn enough to afford a place to live.

They may have jobs. They may have cars. Their children may be in school. They may look like they have a home. But they don't have a safe, stable place to call their own.

That is what lies beneath the iceberg: people experiencing homelessness who are often hidden in plain sight.

Restore a family’s future and help to build a stronger community

A heartfelt thank you to the Fawn Lake Community Association for their generous donation to The Brisben Center following the Fawn Lake VA Triathlon!

We are also incredibly grateful for the beautiful photo book capturing moments from the triathlon. What a thoughtful gift - and a wonderful way to preserve the memories of a day that brought the Fawn Lake community together for fitness, fun, and giving back.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, cheered on the athletes, and helped make the event such a success. Your generosity is making a difference for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and helping provide a path from homeless to home. 💙

We are grateful to be part of such a caring community!

Hunger doesn’t always look like an empty plate.

Sometimes it looks like a parent skipping a meal so their child can eat.

Sometimes it looks like choosing groceries over gas.

Sometimes it looks like a family already struggling to find stable housing - and now facing one more hurdle to keeping food assistance.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) rules have changed, and the impact is being felt across the state.

Virginia’s first-ever statewide hunger study found that 42% of Virginia households experienced food insecurity, including more than half of households with children.

Here in our region, the picture is just as concerning. 40% of households surveyed were food insecure, rising to 44% among households with children.

And under the new SNAP rules, experiencing homelessness is no longer, by itself, an exemption from work requirements. For people subject to the requirement, maintaining benefits generally means completing 80 hours a month of work, education, training or qualifying volunteer service.

For someone experiencing homelessness, that can be one more challenge during an already difficult transition.

Finding a job.
Finding transportation.
Replacing lost documents.
Caring for children.
Finding permanent housing.
And now, navigating new requirements to keep food assistance.

Homelessness is rarely just about housing.

It’s about all the challenges that can stand between a person and stability.

At The Brisben Center, we believe everyone deserves more than a place to sleep.

They deserve a safe place to begin again - and a community willing to help them move from homeless to home.

As the need grows, your support matters.

💙 Help your neighbor.
💙 Support The Brisben Center.
💙 Help make the path home possible.
