Actual Factual (support your profession by knowing and sharing this factual information with friends and neighbors)
Let us never forget! 8 years ago this month, NL teachers agreed to take a salary reduction due to the district's "budget concerns", which saved the district $600,000. One week later, the superintendent received a $63,000 cash buyout of unused vacation days. One year later, it turned out that the district's "budget concerns" were unfounded, as they had a fund balance over $1 million dollars more than what they projected. Then, in July 2014, in the words of a neutral arbitrator, the district "violated their agreement" with NLEA by attempting to extend the teachers' salary reductions beyond what was agreed upon.

Keep this in mind as next year's final budget is being discussed and you hear cries of impending financial disaster: over the past 7 years, NL's actual ending fund balance has averaged $1,681,000 HIGHER than the budgeted ending fund balance, with the largest differences occurring the past 2 years.
