"To go where no man has gone before"

Today at Hopewell Rescue Ron uttered his favorite line from Star Trek before announcing that today's ride would take the group on a spin around the Nancy Wright hamsterwheel.

Under near perfect weather conditions the group rode the 28 mile route with most adding Michaels for extra miles.

Ron welcomed Darren and Mike who rode with us for the first time in many moons.

If you are in the path of that hurricane getting ready to hit the GulF Coast, it sucks to be you.

However, if you showed up at Chewning Park for the Variety Pack ride today, you had only sunny skies and beautiful weather to deal with.

The majority of the group did the 39-mile route while the rest- including the ride leader who was whining about not getting any sleep last night- did the 25. (And even the 25 was really the 23-and-change and the RL removed unwanted squiggles from the Tatum road portion of RWGPS file).

Mo spotted some Longhorn steers and a calf which, of course, made her day but no turtles or cats were rescued.

Next week the VP will be back at Stevensburg.

It is simply not true that the 50 degree start at today's Hopewell ride caused Rescue Ron to fall out of a tree like some Florida Iguana. He simply added more base to the base and carried on.

What is true is that the 15 riders who showed (several not present for the photo) enjoyed a cool, but sunny day on very low traffic roads. Most did the usual Nancy Wright's Hamster Wheel while the usual suspects went off to infinity and beyond.

Today's Variety Pack group at Hanover Courthouse arrived singing the Mr. Rogers ditty "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood." And it was!

The 38-mile route for today's ride was great with very few cars and beautiful scenery across Hanover, King William and Caroline Counties.

It was a great group today. At one point, Mike Indeth (who had arrived still sporting his high pro glow after the successful Cannonball) said to the ride leader "this pace is spicy" to which the ride leader responded, "Yes, it's Barry Barry fast." That said, everyone kept up.

We did have one flat, but Dennis changed it so fast he made club legend Sandy Jakubowski look like an all-thumbs amateur.

Glad to see Todd's Cannonball pictures on the front page of the Free Lance-star today.

Next week the VP will be back at Chewning Park.

When Rescue Ron saw today's early morning temperatures he hoped his roofers would find an excuse to come back to his Lake Anna dacha. They didn't so he got overdressed and greeted the assembled at Hopewell.

Today's mission was a one-of-a-kind ride to Nancy Wright's. The weather was awesome but the dump trucks were back on Paige. Coming to/from the data center build at Bull Church?

It was a very nice ride. Ron rescued one turtle which caused the Turtle's Union to go on strike saying "Dude, we cross the road three times a day every day. If you want to help you need to pay dues."

One shortened ride due to equipment failure but otherwise a good day had by all.

A small showing at Re*****on today because so many of the regular Variety Pack riders were either hiking Angel's Landing at Zion or taking the waters at Baden-Baden.

Those of us who did do the Re*****on to Warrenton ride had a great ride. Weather was near perfect (a little toasty the last 30 minutes) and almost all the roads were quiet. The one exception was the long winding hill on Springs road just outside of Warrenton. Unfortunately, several cars got behind a very large yard service truck which could not pass until the group pulled off the road. Otherwise, it was very nice.

On occasion Paul and John had to call out to Pete and Barry and ask them to throttle back just a bit. "Our Class 3 e-bikes are restricted to 28mph!"

The Town Hall in Warrenton next door to Blue Ridge Cyclery made a perfect rest stop with three nice restrooms and a water fountain.

Next week the Variety Pack is at Arrit Park ride leader TBA.

Today at Hopewell, George Moses (now known as "Rescue George") filled in as RL for Rescue Ron who was counting the roofing tiles at his Lake Anna dacha.

Unfortunately, because Ron was away, 12 turtles went un-rescued and 3 cats remained stuck in trees.

New member and first-time rider Dan L showed up asking about Barry who he'd heard was the man to show him the way to earning KOMs. But, Dan heard that Paul was going to drone endlessly about local history so he stuck with him leaving smoking asphalt for another day.

George had most of the group on an extension of the Quarters route with most ending up between 35 and 40 miles, while Paul, Dan, Val and club royalty Walt McWhirt enjoyed the beautiful weather at a more leisurely pace.

The weather was awesome, but the traffic on Paige Road was unusually busy,

This Thursday the Variety Pack is going to Warrenton.

"What a gyp, we want our money back!"

No, today's Variety Pack group riding from Chewning Park didn't say that. But they could have!

The ride leader called an audible changing the route to the shorter 34-mile one because of the high heat in the forecast.

Day turned out overcast and rather comfortable and the roads were pretty quiet despite the earlier start. We could have gone further.
