Colonel John B. (Jack) Maas Jr.

The Jack Maas Detachment meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the Moose Family Center 1655, 11917 Cherry Road, Fredericksburg, VA. Regular meetings start at 1000 and, on indicated months, the Detachment has a no-host breakfast starting at 0900. was born in East Lansing, Michigan in May 1920 and his parents later moved to Grosse Pointe, Michigan. After graduating from high school he attended

The University of Notre Dame where, after completing his Jr year, Jack decided to enlist as a Navy cadet (V-5 program) and entered flight school at Pensacola, Florida in May 1941. He became a Marine Corps fighter pilot before being sent to Guadalcanal in early 1942. He served several tours on Guadalcanal registering 4 kills piloting a F4F Wildcat and later registering 1.5 kills piloting a F4U Corsair. Jack also served iin the Korean war piloting a F9F Panther. After the war, he was CO of many duty stations and remained assocaited with aviation until his retirement in June on 1968. He moved to Fredericksburg VA in 1968 and managed Shannon Airport and flew many anitique airplanes across the United States until 1977, when he returned to Marine Corps Base Quantico to become the President of the Marine Corps Aviation Association until 1983. He was a member of a very elite aviation association The Golden Eagles, which includes other pioneer aviator such as Neil Armstrong. He remained very close to the Marine Corps and related services until his death on August 7, 2005. His devoted wife Natalie passed on October 8, 2012
They are survived by 4 children..Gretchen Maas-Scott, John B Maas III, Meredith Beckett, and Kevin Maas, numerous grand children, and great grand children.
