As we mark the birthday of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we reflect on Dr. King's international impact, including his landmark 1964 visit to then-divided Berlin, where he spoke before 20,000 people at the Waldbühne, visited the site of the Berlin Wall, and paid a surprise visit to East Berlin to preach before capacity crowds at the Marienkirche and Sophienkirche. Dr. King's visit served as an inspiration to democracy advocates in East Germany, and his legacy of nonviolent protest was seen in the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

The Collaboratory for German Studies in Virginia - CGSV is pleased to announce its first state-wide German Day on Saturday, March 26, 2022. High school programs from across the Commonwealth are invited to visit one of these five universities: the University of Mary Washington (UMW), the University of Virginia (UVa), Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Virginia Tech (VT), and William & Mary (W&M). The day is filled with fun competitions and hands-on activities such as German Jeopardy, Schultüten crafting, and German karaoke.

German Day is designed to be educational as well as entertaining. Students will learn while having fun. The first half of the day is dedicated to competitions, the second half to workshops. The specific times and workshops might vary slightly from campus to campus due to local campus and room conditions. Chose the campus that is closest to your school to save on travel time. We will connect all universities via Zoom several times during the day. For questions about a specific campus, please contact the following faculty:

UMW – Dr. Marcel Rotter
UVA – Dr. Manuela Achilles
VCU – Dr. Oliver Speck
VT – Dr. Esther Bauer
W&M – Dr. Jennifer Gully

Got juniors? Or any HS interest? It says “New England”, but chapter presidents were asked to pass this along...

“Please join Prof. Charles Vannette (University of New Hampshire) on May 10 at 7:00 pm to discuss the value of studying German and how to continue your German studies when you go to college. Most colleges offer German classes and you will benefit from enrolling right away in those programs. Find out why you should contact your future German professors before you arrive on campus, how to combine German with other degrees, and what types of opportunities await you in a global society. Language study opens up countless doors for future employment, research, study, and travel – so prepare yourself by pursuing German when you go to college. Click on the flyer below to link to the Zoom meeting. This informational session is intended for all New England high school students of German, regardless of their future college of choice.”

Fitting to our last talk on race, here is a piece on Natasha Kelly (in German) about The discourse on race in Germany.

Natasha Kelly findet, dass wir in Bezug auf Rassismus nur auf individuelle Erlebnisse schauen, nicht aber auf Strukturen. Das müsse sich dringend ändern.
