During Breastfeeding Week, our team conducted breastfeeding awareness and education during a combined Antenatal and Postnatal Care (ANC–PNC) session at the Magbonkanie CHP.

We spoke with mothers about the importance of breastfeeding, answered their questions, addressed common misconceptions, and encouraged them to feel confident in caring for themselves and their babies.

But this work is about more than one awareness session.

It was about making sure that mothers received the knowledge and support they needed before birth, after birth, and throughout the journey of motherhood.

In rural communities, an ANC or PNC visit can be a powerful opportunity to educate, encourage, prevent complications, and strengthen families.

That is why The Mansaray Foundation continues to bring maternal and newborn health education directly into the communities we serve.

A mother’s journey to a safe delivery begins long before labor and that is why The Mansaray Foundation is committed to making every antenatal care visit meaningful for women in rural Sierra Leone.

Our mothers not only come for a routine check-up. They receive comprehensive care, including:

✅ Ultrasound scans to monitor their baby’s development.

✅ Fetal Doppler assessments to hear and monitor the baby’s heartbeat.

✅ Cradle Vital Signs Alert screening to identify pregnancy complications early.

✅ Weight monitoring throughout pregnancy.

✅ Health education on pregnancy, nutrition, danger signs, and birth preparedness.

✅ Maternal feeding to promote healthier outcomes for both mother and baby.

When women receive comprehensive antenatal services, they are more likely to seek skilled care, complications can be identified sooner, and both mothers and babies have a better chance of thriving.

Together with the dedicated healthcare workers we are working toward a future where every mother has access to the quality care she deserves regardless of where she lives.

Because every mother, baby and visit matters.

One of the ways The Mansaray Foundation is working to reduce maternal mortality in rural Sierra Leone is by partnering closely with Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs). These women are deeply trusted and respected within their communities.

At our recent meeting with them, we listened to their experiences, discussed challenges facing pregnant women, and explored ways to strengthen antenatal care attendance and facility-based deliveries.

We also presented them with T-shirts identifying them as TBAs,recognizing the important role they play in connecting mothers to care and supporting healthier pregnancies.

Real change happens when communities are not just beneficiaries of programs, but active partners in shaping them.

Together, we are building stronger community-health facility partnerships and moving closer to a future where every mother has the opportunity for a safe pregnancy and delivery.

At The Mansaray Foundation, we believe that every mother deserves access to quality healthcare and the support needed to have a safe pregnancy and delivery.

Recently, our team conducted an antenatal care session at Panlap Community Health Centre, where expectant mothers gathered to learn about healthy pregnancy practices, the importance of regular antenatal visits, proper nutrition, birth preparedness, and recognizing danger signs that require immediate medical attention.

These sessions are more than health talks, they are opportunities to empower women with knowledge that can save lives.

In rural communities, where barriers to healthcare remain significant, education and early engagement are critical tools in reducing maternal and newborn mortality.

We are grateful to the dedicated healthcare workers at Panlap CHC who continue to serve their communities with compassion and commitment. Together, we are working to ensure that every pregnancy is safer and every mother is given the best possible chance to thrive.

For years, the community health clinics we support did not have a fetal doppler, a simple tool that lets health workers listen to a baby’s heartbeat during pregnancy. Without it, warning signs were missed and fetal distress went undetected.

Today, things are beginning to change.

With fetal dopplers now in our clinics:
✅ Health workers can detect danger signs earlier
✅ Mothers can be referred in time for life-saving care
✅ More babies have a chance to be born alive

When a mother hears her baby’s heartbeat during an antenatal visit, it builds trust, and encourages continued facility care.

But there is still so much more to do.

In Kabombeh, a rural community in Sierra Leone, something powerful is happening.

More mothers are showing up. More babies are getting a healthier start. And it all begins with access, trust, and a little extra support.

At our recent antenatal care (ANC) clinic, 31 mothers came together seeking care, education, and community. For many, this is more than a clinic visit; it’s a gathering.

By integrating our maternal feeding program into ANC services, we’re helping remove one of the biggest barriers to care. For mothers facing food insecurity and malnutrition, this program provides both nourishment and a reason to prioritize their health and their baby’s future.

Each visit means:�✅ Early detection of pregnancy risks.�✅ Better health outcomes for mothers and newborns.�✅ Empowered women making informed decisions.

In places like Kabombeh, small, thoughtful interventions can create lasting change.

Through our Birthing Bucket Initiative and the expansion of a fully equipped Labor & Delivery Room at the Binkolo Community Health Centre, more mothers are choosing to get the care they deserve.

We’re seeing:
✔️ More women attending antenatal care (ANC) visits
✔️ More babies being delivered safely at this health facility
✔️ Stronger trust between the community and the healthcare providers

These changes mean safer pregnancies, and safer births.

At Adonkia Health Center in the capital city, one critical gap stood between mothers and safe care during childbirth: reliable electricity.

Without power, healthcare workers were often forced to manage deliveries in low visibility limiting their ability to respond quickly, monitor complications, and provide the standard of care every mother deserves.

Through the work of The Mansaray Foundation, we supported the facility by providing a meter and restoring electricity ensuring that deliveries can now take place in a safe, well-lit, and functional environment.

This intervention may seem simple, but its impact is profound:
• Improved maternal and newborn safety during labor and delivery
• Enhanced working conditions for midwives and healthcare staff
• Strengthened health system capacity at the facility level
• Restored dignity and confidence for mothers seeking care

Access to electricity is not a luxury in healthcare, it is a necessity. It enables timely interventions, supports infection prevention, and ensures that no critical moment is lost in the dark.

Every mother deserves safe delivery conditions, no woman should have to deliver in the dark and no life should begin without the care it deserves.

This is what sustainable, targeted global health action looks like: identifying gaps and delivering practical solutions that directly improve outcomes.
