Delaplaine Foundation executive director, Michele Corr was honored to be asked to speak at the Literacy Council of Frederick County’s Celebration of Achievements’ Dinner by their executive director, Denise Hill! She shared the story of her struggles with reading through elementary and high school and that she wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia until her sophomore year at Spring Hill College where she finally received help. She stated, “So many people are embarrassed or ashamed to tell their story but I wanted all the adult learners in the programs to know that I understood how some of them felt and acknowledged that we’re smart but learn and process things in a different way. I also praised the English as a Second Language, Workforce Services and GED students for investing the time into making better lives for themselves and thanked their entire staff, board and volunteers for their life changing work with the people they serve!” Delaplaine Foundation is proud to have provided grant funding to the Literacy Council of Frederick County for many years and we applaud their extraordinary work!

Delaplaine Foundation, Inc. applauds Chords of Courage Founder and Director Caron Dale for the collaboration with the YMCA of Frederick County to provide two summer Student Songwriting Camps - one for high school students and one for middle school students. During the course of each camp, students learned about lyrics, melody, rhythm, the definitions of verses, choruses, and bridges in music. Together, they identified topics of concern to them around which they would compose a song. Some of the topics voiced included bullying, feeling vulnerable, insecure, concerns about racism, ICE, cyber bullying, animal cruelty, sexual assault, hunger. At the conclusion of the camps, each song written was sung together, underscoring a great sense of accomplishment and that music is a catalyst for engagement and a universal language that can change the conversation one song at a time. Delaplaine Foundation, Inc. President Marlene B. Young was on hand to participate along with the students in singing their composition on the closing day of the middle school camp. The Foundation is proud to support this amazing learning opportunity through grant funding.

The 4th Annual Badges for Baseball event for the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County at the Frederick Keys Stadium was a home run! Club CEO, Timika Thrasher and her team, partnered with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation for a day of fun on the field with a rotating baseball skills clinic led by all the branches of Frederick County law enforcement and Fire and Rescue Services as well as STEM activities directed by a team from Leidos. Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller joined local elected officials to kick off the day, welcoming everyone, thanking the Boys and Girls Club students for their energy and participation and expressing gratitude to the local law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, sponsors and volunteers who gave their time to spend the very HOT day with the kids. This is certainly a day they will never forget!
