Time is running out to enroll on our spooky season Zoom pop-up class!

Make three mechanical movie monster postcards for Halloween.

Send spine-chilling Halloween greetings to your spookiest family and friends! Each postcard in this session utilizes movable parts that breathe life (and sometimes fire!) into the featured movie monster. Using simple hand tools and a kit of pre-cut pieces, you will fold and glue your way to a completely monstrous trio in just 90 minutes. You will also learn a bit about the fundamental tools, materials and techniques of paper engineering. Great for beginners!

Gain hands-on experience with this 19th century photo process, including chemistry, technique, and procedures. Following a brief introduction, the majority of your time will be spent under the dark cloth and in the dark tent creating your first tintype images!

This class will include practical instruction on how to make a tintype using the wet plate collodion process. You will cover a brief history, the theory and practice of the process, as well as environmental and safety issues. Working with 4x5 cameras, you will gain experience composing the image, pouring and sensitizing the plate, exposure, processing, final varnishing, and troubleshooting.

Recently we had an amazing visit from journalists and content creators from the United Kingdom and Ireland, hosted by Visit Frederick, MD and the Maryland International Marketing Partnership. They came to Frederick, Baltimore, and Annapolis to write stories about Maryland as an international tourism destination. We gave them a tour of FBAC, informed them all about what we offer as a non-profit book arts center, and guided them through making their own "Symbols of Maryland" relief and letterpress prints!

They were delighted with Frederick's charm and immersing themselves in the roots of their profession at FBAC. We look forward to seeing all of the articles and content they create, and meeting visitors from across the pond as they come to see our beautiful city!

"Circularity" exhibition featuring relief prints by Scott Ponemone opens in our main gallery this Saturday, September 5th and runs until Saturday, October 31st. Scott and his co-author, Karen Klein, will be joining us on September 5th for an artist talk at 2pm.

This exhibition of relief printmaking is centered around the 2025 book Circularity, which was a collaboration between Baltimore artist Scott Ponemone and Cambridge, MA, poet Karen Klein. The book paired 15 of her elegant haiku with 15 of his circular hand-colored linocuts through a cycle from winter solstice to winter solstice.

Since Circularity's publication Ponemone has created 7 additional linocuts. Each of his linocuts celebrated a distinctive decorative arts tradition including ancient Greek ceramics, Oceanic bark cloth, early 19th-century cut glass and Puritan-era tombstones.

The exhibition also includes wood engravings that Ponemone made prior to the linocuts. In each of these prints he explored human hands and how we use them in everyday tasks. The gestures were depicted in a most restrained manner, with just the barest of lines.

We love having artists from near and far spend time creating on our equipment. All of our equipment and studio space is available to rent; so come and make some art with us!
