The Frederick Center is a nonprofit organization that exists to support and advocate for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender and q***r (LGBTQ+) people and our families so we thrive, accepted and affirmed, in the broader Frederick, Maryland community. Respect - We believe all individuals deserve the right to dignity and respect. Authenticity - We value and encourage honesty and self-expression. Equality - We will treat all people equally and strive for equality for all LGBTQ individuals in Maryland
Action - We seek to organize and engage the LGBTQ community and their allies in order to educate and engage the public. Community - We will foster an atmosphere conducive to socialization among members in various stages of acceptance and create a cohesive community. Awareness - We will create a means for identifying at-risk individuals and provide intervention as required. The foundation for a LGBTQ Community Center was built in 2012, including organizing Frederick's first Pride event and starting a weekly youth support group. We are a 501(c)(3) organization. Frederick's first Pride-month event was the Picnic in the Park in 2012 at Ballenger Creek Park; 300 people attended. In 2013 we renamed it simply Frederick Pride; 1,000 people attended. 2014 Frederick Pride moved downtown Frederick; attendance grew to 3,000. In 2016 attendance blossomed to 6,000. Adults: There are numerous monthly events and opportunities to seek support, www.thefrederickcenter.org/links-to-resources/programs. You can also sign up for our free e-newsletter there, or become a member/donate. Adults ages 18-26: We provide a safe and confidential space for LGBTQ+ identifying young adults to meet and provide mutual support. Our Young Adult support group meets weekly on Mondays via Zoom at 7:00 pm. Youth: We provide two support groups, Youth Group (for ages 13-17) and Youth Group Jr (for ages 9-13), in order to allow young members of our community to build friendships, discuss LGBTQ+ topics, and receive support in a safe and affirming space. Youth Group Jr meets weekly on Wednesdays at 5:00 pm, and Youth Group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm. Both groups meet in-person at The Frederick Center, 322 West Patrick Street.

Our next awardee is Madyson Palmer. She graduated from Pennsylvania Western University in California, Pennsylvania with a Master of Arts in Behavioral Crime Analysis and received her Bachelor of Criminal Justice in Forensic Psychology from Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio. Maddie currently serves as the Victim Witness Coordinator in the Victim Services Unit at the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Maddie has been working in victim services for 5 years, including as the Victim Witness Coordinator for her home county’s District Attorney’s Office, and at a local nonprofit who serves survivors of violent crime. While at the Sheriff’s Office, Maddie has attended numerous trainings on crisis intervention, assisted in training law enforcement partners in domestic violence responses, responded to several crime scenes to provide immediate crisis support, and attended many court hearings to provide comfort and support to victims of crime. Maddie is currently working towards being a State and Nationally Certified Crisis Intervention Specialist. In her spare time, Maddie enjoys reading and riding horses, as well as spending time with her partner, Cody, and her two rabbits, Jude and Eggroll. Congratulations Maddie!

It's one month until our final legal clinic of 2026!

The Frederick Center hosts four free LGBTQ+ Legal Advice Clinics per year! This clinic is on Thursday, November the 12th at 5:30pm. You can receive free assistance with family law, estate planning, guardianship, name changes, landlord-tenant disputes, criminal law, adoption, and other civil legal matters, PLUS free notary services! Our Next awardee is LifeCYCLE Studio, Frederick! It is a locally owned indoor cycling studio built around movement, music, and community. More than a place to work out, LifeCYCLE strives to create an experience where people can find community, celebrate milestones, and feel genuinely welcomed from the moment they walk through the doors. Accepting this award is Jake Godlove. For the past four years, Jake Godlove has grown alongside LifeCYCLE. Through classes, themed rides, special events, and fundraising efforts, Jake has supported the studio’s growth while keeping connection and belonging at the center. LifeCYCLE also played a meaningful role in Jake’s own journey of coming out, making the mission of creating welcoming spaces deeply personal to him. That experience continues to shape the way Jake shows up for others and the kind of community LifeCYCLE works to build. A community where LGBTQ+ people and anyone searching for connection can feel seen, supported, celebrated, and completely welcome. At the heart of it all is a simple belief that everyone deserves a place where they can show up exactly as they are, because everyone deserves to shine. Congratulations!

Suzi Borg accepted a Prism award for The Mental Health Association of Frederick County (MHA)! They believe everyone deserves a safe place to feel that they belong. For more than 61 years, MHA has welcomed and supported people of all backgrounds and identities, while advocating for positive social change and creating opportunities for voices too often unheard to be included. Under the leadership of CEO Suzi Borg, who has dedicated more than 28 years to MHA, the organization continues to foster safe, welcoming spaces where people of all ages and backgrounds can be heard, supported, and connected to the resources they need to thrive. MHA is honored to stand alongside the LGBTQ+ community and remains committed to building a Frederick County where everyone knows they belong.

Introducing another one of our Prism Awardees Donald Harver, who leads Pride on the Patio(POTP)! He stepped into that leadership role when its future was uncertain. POTP is one of many LGBTQ+ meet-up groups and POTP has grown into a group known for its consistency each Tuesday evening, no matter what is on the program they are there. Today, Donald maintains POTP alongside four hosts; Kevin, Matt and Liz, and two Ambassadors; Patrick & Kayla, who also hold leadership roles and help guide the organization. Donald is now in the early stages of exploring nonprofit status for POTP, laying the groundwork to make the organization sustainable for the long term. Alongside his community work, he owns and operates Big Yellow Dog Pet Services, a locally run dog walking and pet sitting business. His commitment to keeping q***r community alive and thriving in Frederick is what drives him to keep creating for Frederick.

Kirstin has lived in the Frederick area since 2017 and has served as Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation and Church Life at ERUCC since September 2022. She is an ordained United Methodist Deacon and a graduate of Lancaster Seminary, as well as having a Master’s degree in Group Counseling and Organizational Dynamics with a Certificate in youth and young adult ministry.
She enjoys working with all people as they develop in faith and leadership through experiential adventures and intentionally inclusive and diverse community-building. She participates in the Frederick community by volunteering with the Frederick Center (including leading LGBTQ 101), as a Girl Scout Leader, in FCPS schools, with local faith communities, and leading service projects and
retreats. Kirstin enjoys hiking, campfire-cooking, and travel. She and her family, including her spouse Jason and their two 8th grade daughters, enjoy living area!
