Transform Mid-Atlantic Transform Mid-Atlantic promotes the development of global citizens and just communities in Maryland, D.C., Delaware, and beyond.

The Transform Mid-Atlantic is a non-profit membership association of public, private, 2- and 4-year colleges and universities. Transform provides leadership to colleges and universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware, by advocating, supporting, and encouraging institutional participation in academic and co-curricular based public service and civic engagement programs. Transform strengthens the capacity of member institutions to enhance student learning and to meaningfully engage with communities. Transform is supported through a combination of institutional dues, federal and private grants, and in-kind contributions. The Transform office is housed by Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.

Only 5 days left to register for the 2026 SLCE Conference! Registration closes Sunday, October 11 at 11:59 PM.

Co-Creating Change: Collaborative Community Partnerships comes to American University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 17.

You'll hear from roughly 40 presenters from about 14 campuses and community organizations across 24 sessions. Students are presenting alongside faculty, HBCUs alongside research universities, and nonprofits alongside national civic groups. Topics include social justice education with Baltimore-area youth, classical music in underserved parts of DC, food system sustainability and climate resilience in Southern Maryland, and a service project in Cape Town.

So much of this work is rooted right here in the Mid-Atlantic, and the thread through all of it is partnership. Students, faculty, staff, and community partners: we'd love to see you there.

Co-Creating Change: Collaborative Community Partnerships comes to American University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 17.

You'll hear from roughly 40 presenters from about 14 campuses and community organizations across 24 sessions. We're excited to highlight Kelsey R. M. Bush and Trish Davis, PhD (St. Mary's College of Maryland), presenting at this year's SLCE Conference — Co-Creating Change: Collaborative Community Partnerships, hosted by American University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 17.

Their roundtable, “A Collaborative Method of Community Building,” looks at how campus community engagement offices and faculty can move beyond researcher-driven studies toward genuinely reciprocal partnerships, sharing a real intergenerational project connecting college students and older adults and comparing a research-study approach with an organic, stakeholder-informed one.

We're excited to highlight Christine Edwards Pitkin, MPA (Civility Localized), presenting at this year's SLCE Conference — Co-Creating Change: Collaborative Community Partnerships, hosted by American University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 17.

Their workshop, “Engagement First: Designing Civic Participation for Every Learning Style,” introduces a Visual/Auditory/Tactile framework for designing community engagement that broadens reach and surfaces voices that single-mode outreach misses. Through a hands-on engagement audit, attendees will identify who their current outreach reaches and who it's leaving out.

Their roundtable, “Launching a Campus-Wide Service-Learning Program at a Small Liberal Arts College: Lessons From the First Year,” shares what Amy and Becky learned building a new service-learning program at Hood College — from course design to community partnerships to the “nuts and bolts” of implementation.
