NSPS members recently attended the Camp Lejeune Career Summit, connecting with veterans and transitioning service members exploring civilian careers.

Through our partnership with Hiring Our Heroes, NSPS works to bring talented veterans into the surveying and geospatial profession, a field that rewards the precision, discipline, and problem-solving that military service builds.

If you or someone you know is transitioning out of service, find out more about the Hiring Our Heroes fellowship program: https://tinyurl.com/pav3e46x

. Six years ago, Mario Quiros was rambling through Humboldt County, California, when he came across a vintage Triangulation Station, a century-old monument named KNOLL, one of countless stations bearing that name scattered across the country.

He looked it up. The last recorded report on the station dates to 1956, with notes suggesting it would soon be lost to a Highway 101 rerouting. So Mario did what a good surveyor does: he photographed it, documented it, and submitted his findings to the USGS.

Then he heard nothing.

Until recently, when he checked the website and found his photos and notes had been added to the official record. A monument that the records had quietly written off is now confirmed to still exist, and it's there because one surveyor took the time to look, document, and report.

That's the profession at its best.

Thank you to Mario Quiros of MarioQuiros Surveying, Malibu, for sharing this one with us.

Have a monument worth featuring? Let us know.

. No harness. No hard hat. Just a theodolite, a wooden tripod, and a very long way down.

This photograph shows a surveyor perched on a building ledge, instrument trained on the horizon, with a whole neighborhood spread out far below. Long before modern safety requirements, getting the sightline meant getting up high, however you could.

The tools have changed. The commitment to accuracy hasn't.

Share your vintage field photos or stories using , or email [email protected] for a chance to be featured.

Have you heard of Alpha-Gal Syndrome? If you work outdoors, you need to.

Bart Crattie spent forty years living with unexplained hives before a blood test finally gave him a diagnosis: Alpha-Gal Syndrome, triggered by a lone star tick bite.

From that point on, eating red meat, dairy, or even certain medications can cause a reaction, and in 60 to 75 percent of AGS cases, that reaction is anaphylactic.

Land surveyors are one of the most at-risk professions. Most of us have tick stories, but very few have heard of AGS until it happens to them or someone on their crew.

NSPS is working to change that, including supporting HR 1178, the Alpha-gal Allergen Inclusion Act, which would require alpha-gal to be listed as a major food allergen.

Read Bart's story and share it with your crew.

The more people know, the faster the next surveyor gets answers.

South Carolina Celebrates America250 at their Spring Meeting.

This is a great example of what state-level engagement looks like in America’s 250th anniversary year. The South Carolina Society of Professional Land Surveyors brought its members together for its Spring Meeting, marking the occasion with a celebration honoring both the profession and the nation’s milestone.

If your state society has events, celebrations, or America 250 activities you would like featured in an upcoming edition, please send photos and a brief summary to Trish Milburn:
