Many people don’t realize that getting a white cane isn’t just about picking one up; it’s about learning how to use it effectively to travel safely and independently.

For individuals who are blind or visually impaired, the best way to obtain a white cane is through a referral for Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services. This is often done through a vision rehabilitation agency, state services, or a medical provider, such as an eye doctor or low-vision specialist. In many cases, the cane itself is provided as part of O&M training.

O&M training is key. A white cane is only as effective as the skills behind it. Training helps individuals learn how to detect obstacles, navigate environments, cross streets safely, and build the confidence to travel independently.

If you or someone you know is experiencing vision loss, I strongly recommend contacting a local vision rehabilitation agency to ask about O&M services. The right training can be life-changing.

At the Civil Society Supper Club (CSSC) forum, I had the privilege of meeting Marie Hamilton, president of PS You Are Fabulous. Her nonprofit empowers individuals who are blind by helping them select clothing and accessories that allow them to shine at job interviews, social events, and beyond.

Marie has already built a client base of more than 100 people, and her passion for lifting others up is truly inspiring. Leaders like Marie remind us of the power of creativity, compassion, and community.
