Friends for Neighborhood Progress

Friends for Neighborhood Progress Friends for Neighborhood Progress, Inc. is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation

(FFNP) was established in 1968 by Lord Nickens and Seaven Gordon, leaders of the Frederick County Chapter of NAACP. FFNP is dedicated to assisting lower income residents of Frederick County, Maryland. FFNP, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, leased a building and began operating the Frederick Community Center in 1968. The City of Frederick became a partner in the operation of the Frede

rick Community Center in 1979 under the leadership of former mayor Ron Young. The Frederick Community Center evolved into the Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA) and became the federally-designated Community Action Agency for all of Frederick County in 1993. Friends for Neighborhood Progress remained an active partner in the operation of the FCAA and served as a non-profit development partner for many projects jointly undertaken by FFNP and the FCAA. The City of Frederick chose to end the 43-year partnership with FFNP in 2022. Therefore, FFNP has reorganized, is continuing to operate its Housing First Program, has hired an interim director, and is re-establishing itself as an independent non-profit agency invested in providing direct human and homeless services to lower-income residents of Frederick County, Maryland. It is important to note that FFNP has a 54-year track record of successfully establishing and operating programs and services; has an active and engaged board of directors led by Diane Fink and Chris Bickle; an interim director along with a consultant in order to help to rebuild FFNP into a successful provider of a diverse array of human services.

We are so grateful to the Ausherman Family Foundation for awarding Friends for Neighborhood Progress (FFNP or “Friends”) a generous Capacity Building Grant for Strategic Planning and Board Development! 🥰 They even offered us a conference room to kick off our focus session with facilitator Lili Leonard of Black Dog Philanthropic.

“Friends” has served low income residents of Frederick City and County since 1968, providing services to address basic needs. Currently we provide Housing First Permanent Supportive Housing to disabled chronically homeless residents. As we look to the next 50 years, we’re excited to explore how we can boldly serve and partner with other organizations to address the needs of our community! The Ausherman Family Foundation empowers the passion for change in Frederick County, Maryland! Photo credit goes to the awesome Michele Corr!

This Giving Tuesday, please support Friends for Neighborhood Progress—providing supportive, permanent housing to disabled, chronically homeless neighbors in Frederick. 🏠❤️ Your gift today helps keep a door open, a support team available, and a future possible.

Meet one of our neighbors: for more than ten years, Betsy experienced homelessness, living in shelters and outdoor spaces. In 2017, she was diagnosed with lung cancer, but was unable to receive the appropriate cancer treatment without stable housing. In 2018, Betsy enrolled in FFNP’s Housing First Permanent Supportive Housing Program, and was finally able to obtain safe housing for the first time in years. With permanent supportive housing she was able to pursue regular medical care and complete her treatment. Today, Betsy is cancer-free, living independently in her own apartment, and continues to receive support from FFNP as she thrives.

Please DONATE now. Even $10 makes a difference — and a share helps us reach people who want to help. Thank you for standing with Frederick.

Friends for Neighborhood Progress was the beneficiary of the Shentel Cares employee donation campaign – raising over $3.8K! Several Shenteland Glo Fiber leaders toured our facility and learned more about how FFNP supports chronically homeless disabled individuals with safe housing, food, and case management services. For over 100 years, Shentel has provided phone, TV, and internet services and through Glo Fiber, continues to bring high-speed fiber connectivity to our region. It was great to meet Matt Estep, Angela Olson, Paul DiGiacomo, Paige Ruble, and Megan Kleinberg. Thank you, Shentel and Glo Fiber!!

Community Thanksgiving Dinner, next Wednesday afternoon. Please share the invitation!🦃

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is more than a meal — it’s a moment of grace, hope, and human connection.

Hosted by Asbury United Methodist Church in partnership with Helping Hands and Caring Hearts, this annual gathering brings people together from all walks of life to share a home-cooked meal, foster connection, and celebrate the spirit of gratitude.

Each year, we welcome individuals and families who may otherwise go without or spend the holiday alone. It’s a day filled with warmth, fellowship, and encouragement — where guests share stories, laughter, and the joy of belonging.

Special care is given to reach those who are food insecure, elderly, living alone, or facing financial challenges. Because at Asbury, we believe no one should feel forgotten — everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and loved. ❤️
