Last week, our Empower Our Families Team, alongside the brothers of XXL - Xi Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., spent another inspiring afternoon with the brilliant scholars of the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County

Through a series of fun, fast‑paced “Minute to Win It”–style stations, students explored Black History in motion:

• Designing and launching paper airplanes while learning about aviation pioneer Bessie Coleman
• Creating paper quilt squares inspired by artist Faith Ringgold
• Testing their balance and rhythm while discovering the legacy of Alvin Ailey
• And more hands‑on activities that brought history to life

Moments like these remind us that learning is powerful, engaging, and deeply connected to our commitment to serve the Frederick community. As Chi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, we are proud to pour into the next generation with intention and fun.

Our latest National Reading Month spotlight is And I Call Her Sister by Colleen Nicole Bray, a women’s fiction pick recommended by CTO member — and author — Colleen Nicole Bray.

Some relationships we are born into and some serendipitously happen. This is a novel with platonic soulmates in the forefront. It captures a nostalgic story of friendship/sisterhood, growth and overcoming life’s obstacles. While reading this novel, you will experience a slew of emotions— happiness, sadness, humor, surprise, anger and the list goes on. But the one thing that remains true, the support of our sister-friends is immeasurable.

For more than two decades, Chi Theta Omega has been shaped by women who lead with purpose, integrity, and vision. As we continue our Women’s History Month celebration, we turn our spotlight to the President of our CTO Presidential Team, whose leadership reflects the strength and sisterhood at the heart of our chapter.

Her reflection centers the true meaning of leadership: service, intention, and the commitment to create spaces where women are empowered to rise. Her journey in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® affirms that when women lead with clarity, compassion, and courage, they open doors for generations to come.

Her full reflection is below:

Serving as President of Chi Theta Omega has pushed me to lead with both clarity and compassion, all while holding high standards and intentionally building trust, unity, and accountability within the chapter. My leadership is grounded in service and a commitment to creating spaces where women feel seen, valued, and empowered to lead boldly. Women’s History Month reminds me that I stand on the shoulders of women who navigated barriers with resilience and purpose, and it challenges me to continue that work with intention. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, I carry forward that legacy by leading in ways that uplift our sisterhood, strengthen our community, and open doors for the next generation.

Since Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Chi Theta Omega chapter was chartered in 2003, our chapter has been guided by phenomenal, transformational leaders, and today is no different. As we continue celebrating Women’s History Month, we are highlighting our CTO Presidential Team who are leading us with purpose, vision, and unwavering commitment.

Her reflection reminds us that leadership is more than a title. It is a responsibility rooted in service, courage, and the call to inspire Sorors to reach beyond the “right now.” Her journey in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® shows that women can become anything they work toward with faith, purpose, and vision.

Her full reflection is below:

For me, leadership bears a far greater responsibility than the word can imply. It's about utilizing my journey in Alpha Kappa Alpha to motivate and inspire Sorors to see beyond the 'right now', and to reach beyond what's always comfortable in making a lasting impact for change. I certainly did not get here on my own accord, and the work never comes to a state of completion. Women can be anything they have a heart's desire to work towards and the faith to believe even if it seems impossible.

Women’s History Month Spotlight

Did you know that Frederick County is the birthplace of a talented woman who performed with Black icons Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday?

Today we honor Margaret Ann “Sylvia” Anderson , a gifted singer, dancer, and musician whose roots began in Sunnyside, a Frederick County community.

She began singing as a child on her grandparents’ farm and in the Sunnyside church choir. Note that Ann did not like the farm life and after graduating from Lincoln High School at just 14 years old, she moved to New York and began dancing at Harlem’s legendary Cotton Club. Performing under the name Sylvia LaMont, she quickly became known for her smooth, sultry voice and magnetic stage presence.

In the 1940’s she began singing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and in 1943, she married fellow musician Howard “Church” Anderson, and together they formed Three Strikes and a Miss with Charlie Harris and William Makel. The couple later branched out as The Two Hot Peppers —”Church” on piano, organ, bass, and accordion, and Sylvia accompanying him on bongos. She became especially known for her renditions of “Straighten Up and Fly Right” and “Memories of You.”

Their music took them across the United States and Canada, and locally they lit up Baltimore’s Black nightlife scene, performing at Block nightclubs and the Astoria on Edmondson Avenue.

In the mid‑1970s, Sylvia transitioned from the stage to community service, working at the Waxter Center for Senior Citizens until her retirement in 1980.

In 2001, Ann passed away in her West Baltimore home.

“My mom was a dancer, played the snare drums, and sang with a smooth, unforgettable voice. She is remembered and missed by many.” — Denise (Ann’s daughter)

A Frederick‑born artist. A trailblazer. A woman whose brilliance still echoes through the generations.

Our latest National Reading Month spotlight is Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown, a nonfiction social justice pick recommended by CTO member Dani H.

This is a book that I have to admit is a reread multiple times a year. As a person who deeply believes in social justice, in a world that wants us to fit in a box, this book fuels me to keep going. The book is about how we can all work together to have an impact as leaders, small collective actions to large scale systems change. Not relying on one leader, but channeling the power of adaptation and interdependence. If you have an issue with the push for hierarchy in systems, and know there is a better way, then this book is for you! Plus it's built around Octavia Butlers principals of Afro futurism so you know there's lots of gems to pick up.

💚💗 Wednesday Women Moments
Advocacy in Action

For more than three decades, AKA Day at the Capitol has been a signature Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® tradition in civic engagement. First launched in the North Atlantic Region under Erma W. Barron, our 27th Regional Director, this annual event was created to give members a meaningful way to engage with lawmakers, champion policy priorities, and strengthen AKA’s presence in state‑level decision‑making.

Grounded in the International Program initiative Advocate for Social Justice, these gatherings empower members to amplify community needs, participate in policy discussions, and bring advocacy strategies back to their local chapters.

In February 2026, Chi Theta Omega joined members from across Maryland in historic Annapolis for a day of purpose. The experience included legislative briefings, conversations on issues such as maternal health and education, and opportunities to learn how policy shapes the communities we serve. CTO was proud to stand alongside state leaders and public officials during this impactful day.

A heartfelt thank‑you to Ms. Ingrid Watson for hosting this inspiring annual event and for her continued leadership in strengthening our commitment to service and civic engagement.

A powerful day of learning, leadership, and pink‑and‑green excellence!

Our next National Reading Month pick is The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, recommended by CTO Member Michele W.

“It’s almost 800 pages (and more than 30 hours on audio), but I’m glad I stuck with it because it’s the kind of story that stays with you. The book follows Ailey as she grows up in the city and spends summers with family in rural Georgia, while also taking you back through the lives of her ancestors on a Georgia plantation. You’re watching her present life and her family’s past unfold together, and seeing how those pieces connect is what makes the story so powerful. There are a lot of characters, so making your own family tree really helps. It’s not a light read—there are heavy themes like sexual abuse, exploitation, and addiction—but the author handles them with care. I hope you add it to your TBR and tell me what you think.”

March is National Reading Month, and Chi Theta Omega is excited to introduce the CTO Bookshelf, a weekly spotlight on what our members are reading and loving.

We’re starting with a reflection from CTO Member Denise H., who shared her thoughts after listening to this memoir on Audible:

“Listened to this on Audible and she narrated. First of all I feel like she is big cousin Ketanji paving the way for all of the young black girls who want love and want to do right by their country. I loved her vulnerability and transparency as she talked about her parenting skills, being a wife and sometimes just feeling like she is being stretched in a million directions at one time. So glad that I listened to this book because as a mother of 5 I understood the grappling and sacrifice that she did when choosing a house, a school and a career. It makes it easier and that much more rewarding when you’re doing the work you love and your kids look up to you and share in your accomplishments.”

For our first installment of Wednesday Women Moments, we honor the legacy of the Lincoln Tailoring Association, a sewing factory operated by Black American “Colored” women in Frederick, Maryland from 1945 through the mid‑1950s.

Housed in the historic Alpha Lodge of the Knights of Pythias at 113 W. All Saints Street, this factory became a vital source of employment, skill‑building, and community strength during segregation.

In 2023, Golden Chi Theta Omega member Carol partnered with AARCH Society to deliver a powerful presentation on the women of the Lincoln Tailoring Association, women who entered the workforce during segregation, when opportunities for Black women were scarce.

Despite the barriers, they built a space defined by dignity, craftsmanship, and deep mutual support. Their labor sustained families and strengthened Frederick’s Black community. Golden Carol also spent years carefully identifying every woman in the historic group photograph, ensuring their names and stories were preserved.

We also recognize Golden Chi Theta Omega member Rose of AARCH, whose dedication ensured that this important chapter of local history was preserved and that these women’s stories continue to be told.

This is the legacy we celebrate today, women who stitched together opportunity, resilience, and community pride.
