Not everyone can fly, but everyone can serve. Our flights don't happen without our ground crew.

What is a Volunteer?

A Volunteer is anyone who commits to the Mission of MMHF without flying as a Guardian. We have opportunities ALL YEAR LONG:

• Flight Day Support: Send-offs and Welcome Homes in Grand Rapids, Flint & Traverse City
• Fundraisers & Community Events
• Sign-Up Events to recruit Veterans
• Flight Prep: Mail Call sorting, packet assembly
• Administrative help

Who Qualifies:

Anyone with a LOVE for Veterans and a willingness to work. If you are a self-starter, dependable, and believe in our mission - "It's never too late to thank a Veteran" - you qualify.

This is not casual help. We ask for a strong commitment to MMHF and our Mission. We are guardians of our Veterans' stories and trust. When you put on that MMHF shirt, you represent every Veteran who served.

How to Sign Up:

1. Go to midmichiganhonorflight.org
2. Click Support Us > Volunteer
3. Fill out our Volunteer Form

We will connect you with a need in your region. Every hour you give helps us fly another hero for free.

WHAT IS A GUARDIAN? And What is a General Guardian?

Every Veteran flies with a Guardian. It's the most important job on the Tour of Honor.

Guardians are the one-to-one escorts who ensure our Honorees have a safe, comfortable, and memorable day in Washington, D.C.

What a Guardian Does:

Physically assists Veterans before, during, and after the flight - lifting, pushing wheelchairs, handing out meals and water, and ensuring our heroes are safe all day. You are their hands, feet, and family for the mission.

There are TWO types of Guardians:

1. FAMILY GUARDIAN
You apply to fly with YOUR specific Veteran - your dad, mom, grandpa, grandma, etc. You must submit your Guardian Application at the EXACT SAME TIME as your Veteran's application.

2. GENERAL GUARDIAN
You volunteer to be paired with ANY Veteran who doesn't have a family member able to go. You step up to become family for a hero in need. Many of our most dedicated long-term volunteers started this way and never left. You go where you are needed most.

Who Qualifies for BOTH:

• Age 18-65 years old
• Physically capable of the duties (lifting, pushing, long day)
• Cannot be a spouse - Only exception is if the spouse is also a Veteran. We encourage sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc.
• Able to make a 3-day commitment
• Must attend a MANDATORY training session
• Must be willing to pass a background check

The Cost:

Guardians pay their own way - There is a required contribution of $600. This covers your airfare, meals, and transportation to/from airports and memorials - the same amenities as our Veterans. Your contribution directly helps keep Veteran seats FREE.

How To Sign Up:

1. Go to midmichiganhonorflight.org
2. Download the Guardian Application from the Home Page
3. Indicate if you are a Family Guardian (list your Veteran's name) or willing to serve as a General Guardian

*This is not a vacation! It's a privilege and a responsibility you will never forget.

Apply today - our Veterans are waiting.

Mid-Michigan Honor Flight joins the nation in mourning the loss of an American treasure. ❤️

Dolly Parton — the Queen of Country — passed away yesterday, August 25th at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer. She died peacefully in Nashville surrounded by loved ones.

While the world knew her for hits like "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," we remember her for what she stood for: love of country, love of family, faith, hard work, and giving back.

From donating books to millions of children through her Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, to funding vaccine research, to supporting flood victims in her native Tennessee — Dolly lived the values our veterans fought to protect.

Dolly once said, “I’m not a bit political, but I’m extremely patriotic.” And she lived it.

She released an entire album for our troops on Veterans Day, lent her face to an Air Force KC-135 tanker named “Miss Dolly,” performed for airmen and their families, joined the USO to talk with service members around the world, and through her Imagination Library put free books into the hands of military children at bases like Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Thank you for loving our veterans, for your music and kindness, Dolly. We will always love you.

Join us in playing a Dolly song today in her memory. What's your favorite?
