Colorado is working on a new beaver management plan, which will include keeping more beavers alive and using mitigation strategies to help humans coexist with our furry water engineers. In the future, UCWET hopes to bring a beaver quarantine and relocation facility to Grand County, in case we need to move beavers away from roads or golf courses into a different neighborhood. Stay tuned for more updates!

Yes the skiing was bad this year in the mountain west, but our snowpack is our water. It fills our reservoirs, grows our crops, drives our tourism economy, and provides habitat for our ecosystem. Downstream it powers dams and provides drinking water for our cities. Rainfall doesn’t make up for snowpack, and this year was historically low. Glad to see that Colorado is already starting drought protocols, but we also need to prepare for a changing water future.

Record high temps and low precipitation in the Rocky Mountain west will mean reservoirs will not fill and forest fires will be massive. March won’t save us, and our snowpack looks bleak. Senior water rights users will make river calls this year, and junior users may literally be left high and dry. The ski economy has already been hit hard, now the summer ranching, fishing, rafting, and boating businesses will be next. Time to prepare.

UCWET teamed up with town of Fraser and Grand Environmental Services to assess the current storm water situation. None of our towns treat our storm water yet, and you can imagine the sediments and pollution that often goes directly into our streams. On Saturday 2/21 at 1:00 pm at the Cozens Ranch Museum, we will present our findings and let the public know some green solutions to treating storm water from a small household scale, all the way up to city and county scale. Feel free to join us. There will be snacks!!

Record low snowfall and record high temperatures are making for some pretty tough conditions this winter at the Colorado headwaters. Hoping for some snow on Wednesday, but we don’t know. In Colorado River water negotiations, the lower basin states should probably start to prepare for a lot less water coming their way.

Hope for snow, but plan for drought

Brace yourselves for fire season

Ducks! On the lake! Three days before Christmas! Very low precipitation, high temperatures, and strong winds. Standing in the Troublesome fire zone 5 years after, and things are looking pretty bleak. Consider donating to your local watershed group for Christmas this year.

If this winter continues like this, the Colorado watershed is in a world of trouble. Lower precipitation and higher temperatures are the new normal. Our consumption must decrease and we all need to consider adaptive management strategies to cope with less water.

It’s that time of year again, when the UCWET crew decorates a tree for the annual Lions Club fundraiser. Come and browse from 4-8 at the Fraser Rec Center. And of course, bid on our tree 😉

Removing invasive weeds in Fraser. On August 15th, a group of eleven volunteers helped remove invasive weeds in the storm water drainage near the Fraser library. UCWET and others worked to map and assess the storm water system. And next steps are to mitigate problem areas. Removing invasive weeds helps bring the natural ecosystem back into balance, and reduces pollutants entering our waterways.
