Hey all ya' crazy cat people!!! We love ya' and we love it even more when we can help get the kitties spayed, neutered and vaccinated!

We have a few openings coming up for 1 female and 3 males. (Within the next few weeks). All must be at least 4 months of age.

National Feral Cat Day® is October 16!

Alley Cat Allies created National Feral Cat Day in 2001 as a call to action to raise awareness about community cats (also called feral or stray cats), promote Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR), and empower the millions of compassionate people around the United States who care about cats and kittens to drive change on their behalf.

National Feral Cat Day was launched at a time when municipalities and humane societies impounded and killed 70% of all cats who entered their doors and virtually 100% of community cats. Thanks to the work of cat advocates and Alley Cat Allies’ leadership, things are changing, but there’s still much more to do!

Stomatitis is a condition where the soft tissues in a cat's mouth become irritated and inflamed.

In a cat's mouth, these tissues include the gums, cheeks and tongue. The inflammation can become so severe that cats will not eat.

Treatment options are available, and the prognosis is positive for cats suffering from stomatitis.

SYMPTOMS AND TYPES
Common symptoms or signs of stomatitis in cats can include:
• Pain
• Bad breath
• Ulcerated tissues
• Extensive teeth plaque
• Excessive drooling or saliva
• Fluid buildup in the gums
• Inappetence (lack of appetite)
• Weight loss
• Dropping food from the month while eating.

The primary types of inflammation are:
1. Ulcerative Stomatitis: This condition occurs when a significant amount of gum tissue is lost in a cat's mouth, and it is frequently accompanied by inflammation of the oral tissues.
2. Oral Eosinophilic Granuloma: This condition occurs when there is a mass or growth in or near the cat's mouth, especially on the lips.
3. Gingival Hyperplasia: This condition occurs when gum tissue increases and may grow over teeth.

CAUSE
In kittens, inflammation can occur as teeth become overcrowded in the mouth.
Several metabolic disorders are also known to cause stomatitis in cats, including an abnormal amount of waste products in the bloodstream, inflammation of blood vessels in the mouth (common with diabetes), lymphoma and inadequate levels of the hormone parathyroid.

Infectious diseases and injuries to the mouth can also cause the inflammation.

There may be an association between the development of stomatitis in cats and feline calicu virus. Most cats with stomatitis are carriers of the chronic form of this disease. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) may also play a role.

DIAGNOSIS
A veterinarian will examine your cat's mouth for lesions, teeth decay, plaque and other noticeable signs that may be causing the inflammation. In addition, laboratory blood work will typically be done to rule out any other underlying medical condition for the inflammation.

TREATMENT
Cleaning the mouth and preventing the buildup of plaque is the most effective management of this disease. In some cases, cat antibiotics have been proven effective in reducing inflammation of a cat's oral cavity. In severe cases, teeth will need to be surgically removed to reduce the inflammation.
It may seem drastic to extract a cat’s teeth, but it can be very effective in eliminating the inflammation and pain.

Most cats return to eating the same cat food they ate before surgery.

There are several types of prescription pet medication including pain or anti-inflammatory control and antibiotics, that can be effective at reducing the cat’s discomfort.

However, these are only management tools and, in most cases, do not resolve the symptoms fully.

PREVENTION
To prevent stomatitis in cats, your veterinarian may recommend that you rinse or brush your cat's mouth. There are also some topical ointments that can be used to reduce or prevent inflammation of the cat's gums.

Love community cats or hate them? = Just fix them!!

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the SOLUTION!!!!

❤️ LOVE community cats? ...
You can help the cats in your neighborhood by TNRing them. Spaying a female cat means she won't go into heat, get pregnant, and birth kittens outdoors. Spayed females won’t attract new male cats to your neighborhood.

When you get a male cat neutered, you’ll be making his life MUCH easier. No more fighting over female cats or stinky spraying to mark their territory. And fewer cat fights keep diseases like FIV from spreading.

🚫 HATE community cats?
Removing cats from your neighborhood is NOT an effective solution because it creates the “vacuum effect” meaning new cats will move in to start the cycle of reproduction all over again. But when you get the cats fixed and RETURN them to your neighborhood, the cats will no longer be reproducing and less new cats will move in.

TNR means less odor, less noise, and fewer cats being born. 👍👍👍

Today is GARLIC LOVERS DAY!!

Mixing garlic and yeast with your pet's food can render their blood unpalatable to fleas. However, due to risks associated with garlic, which affects cats and some breeds of dogs, it is generally recommended that you avoid feeding your pets concentrated amounts of garlic. There are many commercial preparations available that contain the appropriate amount of garlic for your pet.
***Garlic
Add one clove of finely chopped garlic into your dog’s food every day. If possible, make use of it in their dinner or meals at night. This will work wonders as it is the most reliable and traditional home based remedy to get rid of fleas.

A popular natural remedy for fleas involves mixing garlic into a pet's good to make their blood unappealing to fleas. This sounds like a good idea until you remember that garlic can be toxic to cats. In fact, all members of the onion family can cause problem when ingested in large quantities. It can be safe enough in small amounts for a healthy cat but it's not something we would recommend risking, especially since it can cause life-threatening anemia in cats.
