Mid-State Amateur Radio Club The purpose of the Mid-State Amateur Radio Club is to promote Amateur Radio in Johnson County, IN. You must pre-register for exams.

The Johnson County Radio Club ARES met on February 18, 1984 for the purpose of exploring the creation of a new amateur radio club to serve the needs of local amateurs. At the March 17, 1984 meeting, it was agreed that the name of this new club would be The Mid-State Amateur Radio Club. The Mid-State Amateur Radio Club meets on the third Saturday of each month at the REMC building at 750 International Drive in Franklin, Indiana. Meetings begin at 8:00 AM and FCC license testing is available after each meeting for those who wish to get their first amateur radio license or upgrade. The Autumn POTA Support Your Parks Weekend is coming up on Saturday and Sunday, 10/17 and 10/18. MARC will have our regular Monthly Meeting on Saturday AM (8:00) and then plan on activating Ft Harrison State Park, US-2256, in the afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM. If you are new to the POTA program or don’t yet have your portable equipment ready to go, come on out and activate and learn.

The MARC will activate using the club call (W9MID) but if you are registered with the POTA program, you’ll get credit for your own call sign, as well.

We’ll meet in the field near the Park Office / Nature Center (take the left-hand turn after entering the park). If you have an Indiana DNR park pass (or there is no one manning the entrance), there is no charge for access to the park. There is plenty of parking and plenty of space to set up your own antenna or share with another operator.

A busy month, September is. The annual MARC picnic for club members and their families was held on Saturday, September 19 at Craig Park Shelter #1. MARC supplied the sirloin burgers and hotdogs and members contributed the sides.

Things got started with a group photo followed by the pitch-in lunch. After feasting, there was a short business meeting and then the results of the officer election were revealed.

Congratulations to Kyle Burns AD9CR who will take over as President at the upcoming October Monthly Meeting.

With the business meeting out of the way, several members grabbed their direction finding gear and set out to locate two fox dens. Bryan Nehl K0EMT reported in that he had found both fox dens.

Meanwhile, The MARC In The Park Ham Jam Band played a short set of well-known tunes that had the audience singing along.

A free, weekly, live, Amateur Radio Technician Class Licensing course on Zoom will begin on Thursday, September 3, and will run through Thursday, October 15 (7 sessions).

The three-hour sessions will start at 6:30 PM Eastern Time. These are the classes sponsored by the National Electronics Museum for three years.

We had a great W9MID POTA Support Your Parks Weekend activation on Saturday with 11 hams and visitors stopping by at Driftwood State Fishing Lake, US-13100.

Bryan K0EMT arrived early and got soaked in a pop-up downpour.

Jim KB9JMU tried to make contacts but couldn't hear any activators to hunt on 15, 17 or 40m. He spotted himself and tried to activate on 17m but got run off twice. “Somebody is right below you…don’t you POTA People ever listen? You just jump on whenever you want…” and the ever popular, “We’ve got a net starting in 5 minutes.“

Jim then joined Jim KD9WVD at his station who was having better luck on 20m with 20+ contacts already in his log. The two passed the mic and continued hunting P2P opportunities.

Matt - He and his son were visiting the Atterbury Museum and monitored us on 20m. We noticed that he had a hamstick antenna on his truck and was ripe for getting licensed and activating some parks.

Plus another fisherman that was looking for his shoes that he had left on the nearby boat ramp earlier in the day. But since we had not seen his shoes, he wasn’t interested in what we were doing.
