In the latest issue of Tennessee Turfgrass, Scott McElroy, PhD, of Auburn University and Travis Gannon, PhD, of NC State break down how turf managers can prepare now for the next Poa control season.

From the critical September pre-emergence application to winter transition and spring cleanup, they outline a three-window approach designed to improve control while diversifying modes of action and helping slow herbicide resistance.

Please join us in welcoming Christy Rose as the new Membership & Events Coordinator for the Tennessee Golf Course Superintendents Association (TGCSA) and Tennessee Turfgrass Association (TTA)! ⛳

Originally from Overland Park, Kansas, Christy recently relocated to Franklin, Tennessee, after serving as an English and History teacher in Special Education. She holds a master’s degree in Education and has a passion for building meaningful relationships, serving others, and creating exceptional experiences for those around her.

Christy and her husband, Pat, superintendent at Belle Meade Country Club, are excited to once again be part of Tennessee’s golf and turfgrass community. Whether she’s planning member events, connecting with industry partners, or supporting our associations, Christy is eager to meet our members and help strengthen the relationships that make our community so special.

We’re excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait for you to meet Christy at an upcoming TGCSA or TTA event. Be sure to introduce yourself and help us give her a warm Tennessee welcome! 💙⛳

When millions of fans tune in to the FIFA World Cup 26™, they’ll see the world’s best players competing on some of the finest playing surfaces ever assembled. What many won’t realize is that some of the research helping make those fields possible started right here in Tennessee.

The University of Tennessee’s nationally recognized turfgrass science and management program was selected by FIFA to help study the construction and maintenance of natural grass playing surfaces for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Through years of research, innovation and collaboration, UT is helping answer one of the tournament’s biggest challenges—creating consistent, high-quality playing conditions across dozens of venues in different climates throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

This partnership goes far beyond the World Cup. The research being conducted today has the potential to improve golf courses, parks, athletic fields, schools and community sports facilities for years to come. It’s another example of how Tennessee expertise is making an impact on the global stage while creating lasting benefits here at home.

The Tennessee Turfgrass Association is proud to celebrate the professionals, researchers and educators whose work continues to advance the turfgrass industry.

When Heritage Middle School assistant principal Dr. Dan Hollandsworth heard that other schools were teasing his students about the condition of their athletic fields, he made a decision.

“Not on my watch.”

With no background in turfgrass management and equipment in rough shape, Dr. Hollandsworth took matters into his own hands. After a full day leading the school, he heads outside – mowing, fixing irrigation, and tackling mechanical repairs – turning hard work into a true labor of love for his students and their pride in HMS.
