Archaeology Day in Pittsburgh

Archaeology Day, Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. at October 14, 2023 at the Phillips Park Recreation Center, Pittsburgh PA. Meadowcroft Workshop in Archaeology

The 7th Annual workshop will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, 2759, 401 Meadowcroft Road, Avella, PA 15312. The theme, By Thought, Word and Deed: Ways of Expressing Social Idenity, will explore the way(s) individuals and groups express their social idenity to the world around them. Clothing, carvings, texties, and hairstyles are ideal for expressing ideitty, but these generally perish. Instead we are leL with the durable artifacts made from stone, clay, bone, antler, metal, and glass. To this list can be added architecture styles and landscapes. The speakers will address the different ways material culture, architecture and space are used to set us apart. Additonal Activities will include weaving demonstrations, the State’s archaeological resources where you can stop at their table and talk to staff from the State Historic Preservation Office who will assist you in recording your archaeological sites and artifact Identification by Mon-Yough Chapter #3 members. These individuals have over 70 years of combined experience with archaeological artifacts. Bring in your historic or prehistoric artifacts for identification. The workshop is sponsored by the Meadowcroft. Rockshelter and Historic Village, the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, and the Heinz History Center. Workshop updates will be posted to both the SPA and the Meadowcroft websites. Registration must be received by October 1, 2023. Registration fees are Adult -$29.00, Senior (62+) - $28.00, Student (w/ valid ID) - $21.00Youth (6-17) - $21.00, SPA Members - $26.00, Children (5 & under) Free Admission and Heinz History Center Members Free Admission. Child Cost of Lunch is $12.00, Adult cost of Lunch is $14.00. Antique Rifles & Indian Artifact Show

Join the Jefferson County History Center and North Fork Chapter 29 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology at the 17th Annual Antique Fi****ms and Indian Artifact Show on Saturday, September 2 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Bring the family and explore two buildings with over 100 tables of exhibitors and vendors from across the state.

The fi****ms building emphasizes 19th century western Pennsylvania gunsmiths and includes accouterments, antique and modern rifle recreations of both flint and percussion rifles with many for sale.

The archaeological building will present some of the finest privately held collections of prehistoric and historic Native American artifacts from this region. Items for display and sale will include flint tools and points, ground stone items, pipes, beadwork, pottery and publications.

Experts in both buildings will be available throughout the day to answer questions about their interests and provide free evaluation and identification of rifles or artifacts brought in by the public.

New this year will be a special speakers area where attendees are invited to learn from short lecturers by experts from both venues. Check back for the schedule.

Enjoy the food concession and other events through the day, including special raffles, children’s activities, primitive games, flint-knapping demonstrations and the popular atlatl throwing area.

Spring is in the air which means we are getting closer to Meadowcroft’s official opening for the 2023 season on Saturday, May 6!

We’re especially excited to welcome visitors to the Rockshelter this year as we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the initial excavation. Guests will have the opportunity to join the archaeologist who embarked on this historic journey years ago, Dr. James M. Adovasio on special Insider Tours of the Rockshelter on Sunday, June 18 at 1 p.m. and Saturdays, July 15, August 5, and October 28 at 1 p.m.

The president, vice president, and secretary of Venango Archaeology, Chapter 30 have stepped down from their positions. The chapter will be meeting in the near future, to regroup and hold elections. 2022 Workshop Description
Participants will discuss the practice and significance of tattooing and other forms of body modification in America among American Indians and Europeans, along with the traditional tools, pigment, and materials used.
Speakers will include members of federally recognized American tribes who will also demonstrate traditional tattooing techniques.
