“What is the Franklin Clapham Group? When abolition was defeated in the English Parliament in 1789 by the work of William Wilberforce, he and his closest friends called together what became known as the CLAPHAM GROUP. The common bond that held these friends together was the desire to apply their Christian faith to personal
, social, political, and local matters, and in turn they assisted in starting the Society for the Reformation of Manners (civility). The Clapham Group, along with other similar societies founded in that period, reflected a sea-change in the social attitudes in England following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and the shifting of liberal attitudes of the Restoration period under Charles II and James II to a more moral and censorious attitude of respectability and seriousness under William and Mary. Branches were set up in towns and cities far and wide and continued to grow and influence the society. THE FRANKLIN CLAPHAM GROUP desires to take on these same characteristics and make an impact in our local and regional community by being a catalyst for:
• Bringing about dialogue between our community leaders and the citizens
• Hosting speaker series, forums, discussions, and seminars on subject matter that speak into on our lives and the culture of today
• Expounding on the Christian Worldview and why it is important in today’s culture
• Helping to restore civility, respectful dialogue, and freedom of true debate among our citizens, candidates, and elected officials
• Challenging and drawing citizens to involvement and action in their respective communities. We hope we will accomplish a little of that in our own community here in Tennessee.
