On Thursday evening, February 22, 2024, members of the American Welding Society’s Drake Well Section and the Venango Technology Center’s Oil Region Student Chapter were given a tour of Komatsu’s Reno facility and their Franklin Experimental Department.

While at the facility, members were given a presentation on what is manufactured at their plant, the number of workers at the plant, and the wages and benefits that are offered.

Thank you to everyone who attended last week's CWI Roundtable event.

The CWI Roundtable Meetings were organized and started in 2011 and have grown in number of attendees throughout the years. We
have attendees from Detroit, Pittsburgh, Erie, Cleveland and the surrounding areas. Some of our contributing members are on AWS code committees and share a wealth of knowledge with us.

These young men just won the Pennsylvania Skills USA Welding Competition. Alex Tafoya won the all around welder and the other young men won the 3-man fabrication team competition. What a great group of young men, these guys have made a lot of scarifies, spent a lot time practicing and had fun doing it. A big thank you has to go to their employers because everyone of these students are on CoOp and working in the welding field. Great things are ahead for them, its on to Atlanta to take on the best in the Nation. Good Luck Guys I know you can do it!!!

The results of the 38th Annual AWS Weld Off Awards. A dinner was held on February 19th, 2019 at the Steamfitters Tech Center in Harmony, PA where the very prestigious industry standardized certificates were awarded.

(Lto R) Travis Crate, Thomas McQuiston (FHS), Lukas Slosser (EFHS), Danial Ruhlman (EFHS), and Robert Fugate

Thomas and Danial received Xray Certifications for 3G (Vertical Up) and 4G (Overhead) while Lukas received certification for 4G

The Drake Well Section will be holding its January monthly meeting at the Pizza Hut on Seneca Street in Oil City, PA. The meeting will start at 6 PM. This will be a social meeting with the topic of discussion to be on upcoming events.

AWS Weld-Off Pittsburgh District

Every year the American Welding Society (AWS) hosts a welding competition among AWS student members in the Pittsburgh District. The competition requires the student to weld two (2) V-groove plates in two different positions: Vertical Up (3G) and Overhead (4G).

Once the plates are completed they are sent out to a local Pittsburgh company to be X-rayed. If the welds pass the x-ray the students will be awarded an x-ray certification.
This is a rundown of this year’s competition:
62 students competed
23 students received a qualification (either 3G or 4G)
06 students received a double qualification (Vertical Up and Overhead)

Three of the six students were from the Venango Technology Center. They are:
Kolton Mayer OCHS
Ty Barker OCHS
Ben Middleton OCHS

On Thursday, 02 February 2017, the Drake Well Section will be touring the Imperial Systems plant. The tour starts at 6 PM and the plant is located at 300 Imperial Drive, Jackson Center, PA 16133. A meeting and super will follow at the Yellow Creek Inn, Jackson Center, PA. Please advise if you plan to attend.

Drake Well Section is changing its meeting from 12 January to 18 January 2017. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, 18 January 2017 at 11 AM at the Venango Technology Center at 1 VoTech Drive in Oil City, PA 16301. If you are planning on attending please RSVP at (814) 677-3097 x 1132. Mike Sherman the District Chairman will be in attendance to address the welding class and the AWS Student Chapter at the Tech Center.

Drake Well Section will be holding its February meeting on Thursday, 02 February 2017. This meeting will be a plant tour of Imperial Systems in Jackson Center, PA. The tour will start at 6 PM.
