On July 2nd, I had the distinct honor of conducting the installation of the Franklin Post 148 Officers for Legion Year 2024 - 2025. This is a symbolic continuation of the traditions of the American Legion that has existed well over 100+ years. It was my first time performing the ceremony as a 5th District Vice Commander, and hopefully I will get to participate in many more in the future. Special thanks go out to all the members of Post 148 for their kind words following the ceremony. I appreciate Commander Theron Levens and Adjutant Durell Langley for extending me the invitation.

1950 06/25 THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY (Allegiance Flag Supply)

The Korean began when armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The United States, acting under the auspices of the United Nations, quickly sprang to the defense of South Korea and fought a bloody and frustrating war for the next three years. Over 55,000 American troops were killed in the conflict. Korea was the first “limited war,” one in which the U.S. aim was not the complete and total defeat of the enemy, but rather the “limited” goal of protecting South Korea. It proved to be a frustrating experience for the American people, who found the concept of limited war difficult to understand and the Korean War never really gained popular support.

1812 06/18 THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY (Allegiance Flag Supply)

The day after the Senate followed the House of Representatives in voting to declare war against Great Britain, President James Madison signed the declaration into law—and the War of 1812 began. The American War declaration, opposed by a sizable minority in Congress, had been called in response to the British economic blockade of France, the induction of American seaman into the British Royal Navy against their will, and the British support of Indian tribes along the Great Lakes frontier. A faction of Congress known as the “War Hawks” had been advocating war with Britain for several years and had not hidden their hopes that a U.S. invasion of Canada might result in significant territorial land gains for the United States.

1846 06/14 THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY (Allegiance Flag Supply)

Anticipating the outbreak of war with Mexico, American settlers in California rebelled against the Mexican government and proclaimed the short-lived California Republic, starting the Bear Flag Revolt.. Though nominally controlled by Mexico, the majority of California was made of former US citizens who distrusted the Mexican government. Having won a few skirmishes, the rebels constructed a makeshift flag with a crude drawing of a grizzly bear. Three weeks after it had been proclaimed, the California Republic quietly faded away. Ironically, the Bear Flag itself proved far more enduring than the republic it represented: it became the official state flag when California joined the union in 1850.
