Strong conservation starts with strong science. In 2025, NWTF invested more than $503,000 in wild turkey research through its National Request for Proposals program. Over the past three years, that investment has totaled more than $2.1 million, helping guide habitat and wildlife management across the country.

The research supported through these efforts helps inform decisions that affect wild turkeys and habitat right here in Indiana, from land management practices to long term population sustainability.

This is how science supports conservation, and why continued research matters for the future of wild turkeys.

Have you ever noticed hens fanning their tails as they move along the edge of woods? That posture may mean more than you think. In a recent NWTF article "High-Tail It Outta There," Dr. Tom examines what it means when wild turkeys hold their tails spread out horizontally.

Here’s what we learned:

➡️Turkeys fan their tails when they sense a threat, want to show dominance, or when a predator is above them.
➡️The posture is often accompanied by alert behavior, stretched neck, focused eyes, and movement toward wooded cover instead of immediate flight.
➡️Even a small threat, like a snake or domestic cat, can trigger this display in more than one hen.

Next time you catch this behavior on a trail cam or in the field, you’ll have a better idea of what the birds are trying to tell us. Want to learn more? Read the full article here:

One month left to report turkey brood sightings 🦃

Have you seen any wild turkey hens with their poults (young turkeys) recently? We want to know! Currently, we have received 1000 turkey brood observations. With our goal of 3500 observations, we still need your help! Report any sightings you had in July and any more you see in August. These reports allow us to estimate wild turkey populations to better manage Indiana’s wild turkey flock.

Report your sightings here: on.IN.gov/turkeybrood
