Nachusa Grasslands is owned and operated by The Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization. Several of the activities described on this website, including workdays, controlled burns, hunting, public tours, the Prairie Smoke Annual Report, and Autumn on the Prairie, are offered and overseen by The Nature Conservancy. Except for specific Friends–sponsored events, such as our Prairie Potlucks and Science Symposium, all Nachusa visitors and volunteers are under the auspices of The Nature Conservancy. Friends of Nachusa Grasslands provides information about The Nature Conservancy programs to help fulfill our goals of promoting volunteerism, science, and education, but Friends of Nachusa Grasslands is not responsible for these activities. Volunteer Work Days take place almost every Thursday and Saturday morning from May to February. See https://www.nachusagrasslands.org/workday-signup.html for details. Advance registration via SignUpGenius (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080945afa82baafb6-nachusa8) is required. What can I expect when I volunteer on a workday? Check out the Q&As on https://www.nachusagrasslands.org/thursday-and-saturday-workdays.html. See the calendar for specific workday areas and plans: http://www.nachusagrasslands.org/calendar.html. Workday safety protocols are posted at https://www.nachusagrasslands.org/volunteer-workday-safety-protocols.html. No experience is necessary – equipment and training will be provided. Wear long pants, sturdy shoes, work gloves, and a hat. Bring a face mask to wear if you ride in a Nachusa vehicle.
