June is Cataract Awareness Month. It’s the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Meanwhile, the National Eye Institute estimates the number of people in the U.S. who experience cataracts is expected to double by 2050. By age 80, most people either have cataracts or have had cataract surgery.

It’s more important than ever to schedule a comprehensive, annual eye exam with a doctor of optometry to detect cataracts and maintain overall eye health.

It’s never too early to learn about eye health. The National Eye Institute has fun learning activities for kids – starting with learning about optical illusions, which play tricks on your vision.

Optical illusions teach us how our eyes and brain work together to see. You live in a three-dimensional world, so your brain gets clues about depth, shading, lighting and position to help you interpret what you see. But when you look at a two-dimensional image, your brain can be fooled because it doesn't get the same clues. Take a look at these optical illusions. Can you figure them out?

It’s yard work time again, but you need to gather more than just your tools. Up to 40% of eye injuries occur while people are working in the yard, doing home repairs, cooking or cleaning. Many of these injuries can be easily avoided with the proper preparation and protection:

April is National Stress Awareness Month. When you’re stressed out for a long time, the constant dilation makes you sensitive to light and can cause serious strain on your eyes. Plus, the tension you feel will cause the muscles in and around your eyes to tighten – creating a feeling of soreness or twitching.
