VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Help Rehabilitate the Lake Michigan Dune!
Take part in restoring our Lake Michigan dune and bluff!
DATE: May 2, 2026 at 10am. Meet at the Lake MI bluff stairs.
The Board of Trustees has directed the Lake Michigan Dune, Bluff and Beach (DBB) Committee to spearhead an effort to rehabilitate the dunes and bluff at Lake Michigan. Last fall committee members erected a split rail fence at the base of the old dune climb path to block access from the parking area. We also added new signs to direct members and guests to use the stairs.
This spring to help build back the dunes, twenty-eight 100 stem bundles (2800 stems) of American Beachgrass (dunegrass) have been ordered from the Benzie Conservation District. These stems will be planted on the lake side of the dune and up the path. These plants will arrive May 1st. Mark Walton has volunteered to lead volunteers in their planting.
Mark is asking for volunteers to help plant on Saturday May 2nd. He plans to start at 10am weather permitting. Meet at the site and bring water, work gloves and a planting tool that can make an 8” deep hole. He says a pitchfork works well, or a long spade shovel.
Interested folks can email David Belknap at [email protected] or text to 512-848-4430 to let us know you are coming and to contact you in case there is a weather delay.
Later this spring, we will be installing snow fencing to protect the plants, capture the blowing sand, and block folks from using the old paths.
