Leadership Kentucky, created in 1984 as a non-profit educational organization, brings together a selected group of people that possess a broad variety of leadership abilities, career accomplishments, and volunteer activit

ies to gain insight into complex issues facing the state. By fostering understanding of how the state’s issues are interconnected, and by forging new relationships among community and regional leaders, Leadership Kentucky graduates bring a fresh and informed perspective to their communities and companies, serving as important participants in the unified effort to shape Kentucky’s future. Through a series of seven monthly, two-day sessions, held in various locations in the state, participants are educated about the state of Kentucky and its challenges. They meet and talk with Kentucky’s current leaders and through a systematic educational program, explore the state’s opportunities, needs and resources. Kentucky’s rich cultural heritage and its unique diversity are woven throughout the curriculum that features the state’s economy, education, health and human services, law and justice, and environment. In addition, Leadership Kentucky provides a thought-provoking experience focusing on the attributes of leadership and what it means to be a leader. By visiting various regions of the Commonwealth, the participants develop an enhanced view and a new meaning to the word community that spans the entire state. Leadership Kentucky strives to maintain a geographical, occupational, ethnicity and gender balance among participants. Leadership Kentucky is a 501C-3, non-profit educational organization dedicated to developing talents and energies of Kentucky’s present and future leaders. There’s something special about a community that truly works together and the ELEVATE Kentucky Class of 2026 experienced that firsthand in Henderson.

Participants were welcomed by Abby Dixon, Executive Director at Henderson Tourism Commission; Missy Vanderpool, Executive Director of Henderson Economic Development; Clay Gillham, Executive Director, Henderson Chamber of Commerce; and Kelsey Hargis, Henderson City Commissioner, Chair of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. As the class sat down with this strong group, what stood out wasn’t just their individual roles, but how intentionally they align their efforts.

Through ongoing communication and monthly meetings, Henderson’s tourism, economic development, chamber, and city leadership stay deeply connected. This ensures that everyone understands how their work overlaps, supports one another, and ultimately drives the community forward. It’s a shared commitment to collaboration and synergy.

That spirit came to life as the class stepped into downtown Henderson. Along the walk, stories unfolded not just through buildings, but through the people and businesses that give the area its character. Places like Simon’s Shoes, a family-owned business that has served the community for over 100 years, stand as a testament to Henderson’s legacy of dedication and pride. Gallery 101 adds color, creativity, and a welcoming artistic touch to the visitor experience reminding everyone that hospitality here goes beyond friendliness.

Every corner of downtown reflected a shared vision and an intentional effort to make Henderson the Most Hospitable Town in the USA. Not through chance, but through thoughtful alignment, strong relationships, and a deep belief in community.

During their recent visit to Owensboro, the ELEVATE Class of 2026 experienced an inspiring and insightful visit to the region’s healthcare community.

Participants heard from Debbie Zuerner, Director of Community Engagement at Owensboro Health and LKY Alum 2021 and LKY Board Member, and Bruce Williams, President & CEO of HealthForce Kentucky (), who showcased how intentional design and strategic planning are shaping the future of care. From thoughtfully designed hospital spaces that prioritize patient comfort, staff efficiency, and healing environments, to innovative approaches rooted in local community health assessment data, the conversation highlighted how healthcare systems can meaningfully respond to real community needs.

A standout element of the visit was the exploration of advanced simulation labs, such as the delivery simulation space complete with mom and baby mannequins, which are transforming how emerging healthcare professionals are educated and trained. These hands-on environments provide critical, real-world learning experiences that strengthen clinical skills, boost confidence, and ultimately improve patient outcomes across Kentucky.

This experience underscored the power of collaboration, innovation, and intentionality in building healthier communities. Thank you to our partners in Owensboro for an unforgettable deep dive into the future of healthcare leadership.

In Kentucky, some of the best conversations happen around a table. While in Owensboro, the ELEVATE Kentucky Class of 2026 got to experience that for themselves. They spent time in a Joy of Cooking class working side by side, and enjoying the laughs that began as soon as the aprons were donned. Participants were trying something new, helping each other along the way, and sharing an incredible experience.

Later in the session, food was once again the focus as the Class of 2026 gathered for an etiquette lunch. The setting was much more formal than the cooking class, but the experience was just as meaningful. So many professional interactions happen over meals, whether a new client meeting, a networking lunch, or a conversation with a supervisor. Learning how to navigate those settings with confidence will help participants feel comfortable and prepared when those moments come.

Across both experiences, one thing stayed the same. Food created the space for connection, and our food culture is part of what makes Kentucky special. Meals are not just about what is served (although the barbecue in Owensboro is outstanding) but are instead opportunities to connect with, care for, and learn from one another. Bon appetit, ELEVATE!

“A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other’s lives….”
— Wendell Berry

This idea came into sharp focus for the ELEVATE Kentucky Class of 2026 during the visit to Pikeville and eastern Kentucky, where the stories of place, people, and possibility are deeply intertwined.

Participants reflected on the Pikeville Cut Through Project, a bold and once unimaginable act of vision that literally reshaped the landscape to unlock the community’s future. Janice Way, LKY President and CEO, shared the history of the project and her recollection as a Pikeville native. The discussion provided a powerful reminder that leadership grounded in long term commitment and shared purpose can redefine what is possible for generations.

That same spirit was evident in the City of Wayland, a former coal camp navigating flood recovery, revitalization, and reinvention. There, Mayor Jerry Fultz and Rusty Justice, Managing Member BitSource and LKY Alum 2013, shared about the realities of geography, history, and limited resources while choosing collaboration and reimagination of space and facilities.

The visit also highlighted the critical role of the Appalachian Valley Autism (AVA) Center, where access to care is shaped by distance and geography. The AVA Center exists because Donovan and Debbie Blackburn recognized that families should not have to leave home to access essential services and believed eastern Kentucky deserved the same standard of opportunity and care found anywhere else.

Together, these experiences underscored a central lesson of the ELEVATE Kentucky Pikeville session: place both challenges and calls us. The people who share it, through trust, concern, and courage, ultimately determine its future.
