Pioneering Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has died. She was 97. Yayoi Kusama Studio said she died at a hospital in Tokyo on Aug. 14.

🎒✏️ Word of the Week: 新学期 (しんがっき・shingakki), new school term
American students of all levels head back to school this August and September! The Japanese word for "new school term", 新学期 (shingakki), describes this exciting atmosphere. 🏫

In Japan, this word doesn't mean the start of the school year, but rather the start of a new term. That's because Japan's school year begins in April, not September. 🌸 So while US students are starting something brand new, Japanese students are actually returning from summer break to start their second of three terms (二学期, nigakki), which runs from September to December.

The US and Japan have two different school calendars, but the same feeling of backpacks, new notebooks, and squeezing in the last bit of summer remain! 🍂📚

For decades, this evening has celebrated the special friendship between Japan and Kentucky, honoring the cultural, educational, and economic ties that keep bringing our communities closer together.

We will welcome special guests from the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the Kentucky Japan Caucus, and Dr. Naoya Yoshida from Wi******er Farm.

🎵 Additionally, we will feature performances from the Berea College Taiko Group, the jazz duo Azurecat, and shakuhachi player Dr. Sarah Strothers.

🌳 Angelica Ramirez, the Bonsai Curator at Waterfront Botanical Gardens in Louisville, will perform a bonsai demonstration, which will be auctioned off at the Gala!

🌻 Word of the Week: ひまわり (himawari), sunflower

The Japanese word for sunflower, ひまわり (向日葵 in kanji), comes from the flower's tendency to turn toward the sun while it's growing, making it a symbol of warmth, positivity, and vitality. ☀️

In Japan, ひまわり is closely associated with August, when sunflower fields are in full bloom across the country. They often appear in summer festivals, photography spots, and seasonal art, representing the bright, energetic spirit of midsummer! ✨

🔥 Word of the Week: 猛暑 (mōsho), intense heat; heat wave 🌡️

猛暑 combines two kanji: 猛 (mō), meaning "fierce" or "extreme," and 暑 (sho), meaning "heat." Together, they describe severe, oppressive summer heat, the kind that dominates Japan in July and August. ☀️

Mōsho is also an official meteorological term. The Japan Meteorological Agency classifies days as:
🌤️ 夏日 (natsubi): a "summer day," 25°C (77°F) or higher
🔆 真夏日 (manatsubi): a "midsummer day," 30°C (86°F) or higher
🥵 猛暑日 (mōshobi): an "extremely hot day," 35°C (95°F) or higher
🌡️ 酷暑日 (kokushobi): a "cruelly hot day," 40°C (104°F) or higher

Mōshobi and kokushobi have become increasingly common in recent decades, and Japanese news broadcasts regularly issue heatstroke warnings (熱中症警戒 / necchūshō keikai) during these periods. 📢⚠️
