The reentry groups do not provide services for Returning Citizens, nor do they have reentry programs. They are made up of individuals and organizations networking together to share information and improve the reentry process. The members may be organizations and/or individuals that provide services and/or have interests in helping. Each group is focused toward Returning Citizens coming back to the
ir areas, the issues involved, and making their community safer. There are reentry groups in Ashland, Lexington, Louisville, London, Northern Kentucky, Owensboro, Paducah, Hopkinsville, Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, Prestonsburg, and Morehead. Reentry is the process of someone who has been incarcerated returning to the community. They may have full filled their obligation (served all of their sentence) or they may be in the process of completing their sentence while on parole or probation. Reentry involves the use of programs targeted at promoting the effective reintegration of offenders back to communities upon release from prison and jail. Reentry programming, which often involves a comprehensive case management approach, is intended to assist offenders in acquiring the life skills needed to succeed in the community and become law-abiding citizens. A variety of programs are used to assist offenders in the reentry process, including prerelease programs, drug rehabilitation and vocational training, and work programs. Effective Reentry is not about handouts or trying to reduce punishment. It is about a person taking responsibility for their past and being committed to staying straight. Making our communities safer and breaking the incarceration cycle will benefit all of us.
