As Plastic Free July comes to a close, we wanted to share some stats that might help you transition away from single-use plastics all year.

- Over 50% of plastic only gets used once and thrown away
- Scientists estimate there are about 171 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean
- Many microplastic chemical additives are associated with well-established human health risks
- Plastic films, both general use films and food-packaging films, such as candy wrappers or snack bags, represent the second and third most littered items in America

Restrictions on single-use plastic = less litter!

From the New York Times, "Using data complied by the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy, researchers analyzed results from 45,067 shoreline cleanups between 2016 to 2023, along with a sample of 182 local and state policies enacted to regulate plastic shopping bags between 2017 and 2023.

They found areas that adopted plastic bag policies saw a 25 to 47 percent reduction in the share of plastic bag litter on shorelines, when compared with areas without policies. The longer a policy was in place, the greater the reduction."

Using crowdsourced data from shore cleanups, researchers found that areas that enacted plastic bag bans or fees had fewer bags littering their lakes, rivers and beaches than those without them.

The countdown to the really is on and we’re feeling 🥳😳🤩😱

On July 4, 2026, America will celebrate its 250th birthday - that’s just over a year away!

🎯 Our goal:
25 billion pieces of litter removed
25,000 communities beautified
Countless small acts of kindness, connection, and care

Every tree planted. Every sidewalk cleaned. Every pollinator garden started. It all counts.

We’ve made great progress so far, but we need YOU to get involved and be part of something truly great! kab.org/greatest
