The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department created a or residents to view their well and septic records online. The portal went live on the website with Leelanau County records in early 2021 and Benzie County records have been digitized and added just last month.

“In 2019, the Health Department advocated to the counties for funding to provide increased access to the department’s septic system and water well records for our residents by providing them a way to access our digitally scanned records,” said Eric Johnston, environmental health director for the Health Department. “The benefits of the portal were to improve public access to information, add natural disaster protection, and allow staff, homeowners, realtors, septic pumpers, and contractors to get convenient access to important information anywhere that has internet access.”

The Benzonia Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously to dedicate $40,000 to a proposed sewer feasibility study (a total cost of $100k, with the villages of Benzonia and Beulah each dedicating $10k and the Benzie County Board of Commissioners dedicating a matching $40k)--$80k from Benzonia Township and Benzie County is coming out of the $169,360.32 in 2022 adult-use ma*****na payments given to the township and $169,360.32 given to Benzie County by the state for allowing four adult-use recreational ma*****na businesses to operate within the township/county.

The study will look at septic systems along part of the Crsytal Lake shoreline and will evaluate how many households and businesses are hooked up to what systems? For instance, it is already known that the entirety of the Village of Benzonia has water but no sewer system, thus relying entirely on septic systems.
