Sunday, June 21: Learn how to make homemade paper utilizing the invasive yellow flag iris.

This is the first workshop in our Alchemizing Invasives series, turning invasive plants into useful materials. Held 12-3 at The Boathouse at River Row, in South Frankfort, registration is limited to 12 participants. The cost is $10, with fees waived if cost is a barrier to participation.

This workshop is led by Rachel Singel, an associate professor at the University of Louisville who grew up on a small farm, has a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking, and has studied and practiced art around the world. Due to the length of time it takes to make paper with natural fibers, Rachel will be giving a demo with some pre-processed materials.

🚨🌱Introducing the Alchemizing Invasives workshop series!

Held this summer and fall, local artists will teach us how to make baskets, paints, papers, and more, while we also learn more about why invasive plant management is important for the health of our ecosystem.

There are many reasons to control the spread of invasive plants in our ecosystem, and over the next few months, we’ll dive deeper into some of those with you as the Alchemizing Invasives workshops go on. This series was developed by Woods and Waters Land Trust Stewardship Specialist Kat Smith, who is also a multi-media artist and finds inspiration through tending the land and removing invasive species.

The first workshop is June 21: Yellow Flag Iris Papermaking, with Rachel Singel. Learn more and register here:https://www.woodsandwaterstrust.org/alchemizing-invasives.

A little beauty from the Backbone Wetland. 🌸

Native swamp rose is in bloom, filling the air with its sweet fragrance while providing food, shelter, and nesting habitat for birds and other wildlife. Moments like this remind us why conservation matters—protecting the places where nature thrives and where people can find joy, wonder, and connection to the natural world.

🐦🌿 Birds of Fields and Forests at West Sixth Farm's 8th Birthday Celebration 🎉

Join Woods and Waters Land Trust's Executive Director and host of the Sixth Farm Hiking Club, Heather Housman, this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for a guided bird hike through West Sixth Farm's fields, forest edges, and woodlands. We'll explore how these connected habitats support birds like Indigo Buntings, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Wood Thrushes, while learning how working lands and healthy forests can benefit wildlife.

West Sixth Farm's thoughtful stewardship has created a landscape where both people and nature can thrive, making it the perfect place to celebrate eight years of farming, community, and conservation.

No birding experience is needed, and registration is not required. Just bring your curiosity and binoculars if you have them!

A quiet reminder that nature is never far away in South Frankfort. This doe made her way past the school garden, crossed the yard at the Boathouse, and disappeared into the forest along the river’s edge.

The River Row Forest may be small, but it provides important habitat and a natural corridor for wildlife right in the heart of our community.

Why give to the Backbone Wetland (and Woods & Waters Land Trust) on KY Gives Day?

If you live in the Lower Kentucky River watershed, the Backbone provides essential ecosystem services that only a wetland can provide: improving drinking water quality, trapping and slowly releasing rain and floodwaters, providing forage and habitat for native flora and fauna (including the otters), and more.

And today, your impact goes twice as far. Every donation will be matched dollar for dollar through our $15,000 Wild Places Matching Fund.

Show your support for the Backbone Wetland before 11:59 p.m. tonight: https://www.kygives.org/organizations/woods-waters-land-trust

For all the Backbone Wetland provides to our community, we’re asking our community to give back to the Backbone Wetland.

Today is KY Gives Day, an annual statewide fundraiser for nonprofits. It’s an important part of Woods and Waters Land Trust’s fundraising plan for the year, and we know you can help us get to our goal. Whether you can give $15, $50, or $500, every bit helps fund the necessary work to move this vital community landscape closer to restoration and public access, and support all of WWLT’s conservation initiatives. Gifts made today are matched dollar for dollar through our Wild Places Matching Fund.
