Women Veterans Day is observed on June 12 to honor the contributions of women in the U.S. Armed Forces, marking the anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act signed in 1948.
Historical Significance
Women Veterans Day commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act on June 12, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman. This landmark legislation allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the military, enabling them to enlist in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Prior to this act, women could only serve in limited capacities, primarily as nurses.
