Many people associate concussions with athletes, but the leading cause of concussion isn't actually sports - it's falls.

Tripping over a power cord or forgotten toy. Falling off a bike. Slipping on a wet floor. Stumbling down the stairs. Everyday accidents that may seem minor, but if left untreated, can cause lasting effects.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Non-fatal overdoses can cause hypoxic or anoxic brain injuries - acquired brain injuries that occur when the brain either does not get enough oxygen (hypoxia) or does not receive any oxygen (anoxia). Additionally, brain injury and substance misuse are common co-occurring conditions: approximately one quarter of people entering brain injury rehabilitation are there as a result of drugs or alcohol, and nearly 50 percent of people receiving treatment for substance misuse have a history of at least one brain injury.

🇺🇸 WOODFORD COUNTY MILITARY FREEDOM FESTIVAL — THIS SATURDAY! 🇺🇸

The Kentucky National Guard Memorial Fund is proud to participate in this Saturday’s Woodford County Military Freedom Festival at Falling Springs Park, 275 Beasley Road in Versailles, Kentucky.

The festival begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, and admission is FREE! Bring your lawn chairs and spend the day enjoying live music, food, fellowship, a silent auction, and a community celebration honoring those who have served our nation.

We extend our appreciation to organizers Doug and Valerie Day, who have dedicated countless hours to honoring and recognizing our veterans, service members, and our American heroes. They travel throughout Kentucky organizing events and ceremonies that recognize the service and sacrifices of our military members, veterans, and their families.

🇺🇸 This year is especially meaningful as our community comes together during America250 to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary and honor the generations of men and women whose service and sacrifice have helped preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

Brain injury survivors are no strangers to hearing words that hurt. Sometimes those comments are unkind, and sometimes they're unintentionally hurtful.

Come out and join us for the 25th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony for September 11th (Patriot Day, Friday). Located at the 9/11 memorial at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central. The ceremony will start sharply at 8:15, so please arrive early.

A quarter of a century may have passed, but we will never forget the lives lost in the attacks that day, and the sacrifices of first responders and citizens who performed acts of heroism.

In sharing her brain injury journey, Elizabeth Wiley poses a question: If you lived when you should have died, what word would you use to describe yourself?

In August of 2022, a car crash left Elizabeth with, among other injuries, multiple brain bleeds. She was placed in a medically induced coma at the hospital, where the doctors told her family and friends it would be a miracle if she woke up.

Well, Elizabeth did wake up. And for that, the word she would use to describe herself and her journey is miracle.
