FDA Assessment Survey Request

On August 6, 2026, the FDA announced it is granting exemptions from certain Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) requirements under section 582 of the FD&C Act to small dispensers (e.g., pharmacies) and their applicable trading partners.

The FDA is requesting small dispensers to complete the small dispensers assessment survey by Sept. 22, 2026. Small dispensers may designate a their party (e.g., a consultant) to complete the survey on their behalf. The exemption period exists specifically to allow time to complete this assessment, publish the final report for public comment, and hold a public meeting on the results.

โš ๏ธ KDPH Issues Updated MMR Vaccination Guidance During Kentucky Measles Outbreak

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) has released updated guidance for MMR vaccination during the ongoing measles outbreak in Kentucky. Multiple cases have been identified across several counties, with additional cases and exposures under investigation.

๐Ÿ’‰ Pharmacists and other healthcare providers are encouraged to review patientsโ€™ MMR vaccination status and offer vaccination based on age, vaccination history and risk of exposure.

Key guidance includes:
โ€ข Children and adolescents who are unvaccinated should receive their first MMR dose now, with a second dose at least 28 days later.
โ€ข An early MMR dose may be considered for infants ages 6โ€“11 months who are at increased risk of exposure.
โ€ข Adults born in 1957 or later should have their vaccination history and evidence of immunity reviewed, particularly those living in or having frequent close contact with affected communities.
โ€ข Individuals with two valid MMR doses generally do not need an additional dose.

KDPH is asking pharmacies and other private providers to help expand access by vaccinating eligible patients through the healthcare settings they already use.

๐Ÿšจ KENTUCKY HEALTH ALERT: Ongoing Measles Outbreak

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) has confirmed an ongoing measles outbreak in Kentucky, with cases identified in multiple counties and additional cases and exposures under investigation.

KPhA encourages pharmacists and pharmacy teams to review the KDPH Health Alert issued August 13 and remain alert for possible cases.

๐Ÿ’‰ Pharmacists play an important role in protecting Kentucky communities. Pharmacy teams can help by:

- Reviewing patientsโ€™ MMR vaccination status.
- Educating patients about measles symptoms and prevention.
- Remaining alert for symptoms including high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and rash.
- Promptly reporting suspected cases to the local health department without waiting for laboratory confirmation

Measles is highly contagious, making awareness, vaccination, and prompt identification especially important.
