This Overdose Awareness Day, our CHFS team keeps in our hearts those we've lost to overdose and their families, and we stand with Kentucky families who are struggling with addiction. As Gov. Beshear says, "One life lost to overdose is one too many." We're grateful to our many partners across Kentucky who work each day to prevent overdose deaths.

Fentanyl is poisoning communities across the country. It's the leading cause of death for adults ages 18 to 45. It's hidden in counterfeit pills, disguised as something safe. But it's anything but safe. Just 2 milligrams—smaller than a grain of salt—can kill. Every day, we lose lives. Real people. Real families. Many had no idea what they were taking. They didn't get a second chance. This National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day—we remember those we've lost, and we fight for the ones we can still protect.

Kentucky households can apply for LIHEAP Summer Subsidy from August 3 - September 11, 2026, to help offset cooling costs with a one-time electric benefit. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, or until funds are depleted.

Interested households should contact their local Community Action Agency, based on county of residence, to determine eligibility and complete the application process. To locate the office serving your county, visit www.capky.org/network or call 800-456-3452.

Households must meet eligibility requirements, including household income of up to and including 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines to qualify for assistance. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electric vendor.

No disconnect notice, past-due bill, or eviction notice is required to apply. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect eligibility.

It can feel like every time we turn around, there's another dangerous substance appearing in the illicit drug supply. Unfortunately, that's becoming the reality, and we want our community to be aware of one of the latest concerns: nitazenes.

Nitazenes are a group of synthetic opioids that can be many times more potent than fentanyl. They are often mixed into or sold as other drugs without a person's knowledge, increasing the risk of overdose.

We've begun seeing substances like these appear in our area, making it more important than ever to stay informed and look out for one another.

If someone is difficult to wake up or is not breathing:
• Call 911 immediately.
• Give Naloxone (Narcan) if it is available.

If you or someone you know is looking for support, treatment, or recovery services, FindHelpNowKY.org is a free resource that helps connect people with available treatment options across Kentucky. For local resources in Hardin County, check out the C.O.P.E. Resource Guide to find prevention, treatment, recovery, and support services close to home.

Awareness saves lives. By staying informed and sharing accurate information, we can help keep our community safer.
