Since its inception in 2016, the Franconia Soaring Foundation, among its many missions, has been dedicated to preserving the Franconia Airport (airport identifier 1B5) as a means of facilitating glider operations in close proximity to the uniquely favorable soaring conditions in the White Mountains geographical region. In keeping with that, the FSF was able to accommodate a long-standing annual gathering on Labor Day Weekend between members of the Franconia Soaring Association and the members of the Greater Boston Soaring Club (GBSC.)
A few of the GBSC members have returned to Franconia for this annual event for at least 15 years! Others for 7 or 8 years! What uniquely attracts them to soaring out of 1B5 are the surrounding mountains and views, the well-maintained grass field, the ridge flying, the family-friendly setting, and the friendliness of the local FSA pilots and Franconia residents. GBSC members generally stay three nights in Franconia over the holiday weekend, thereby supporting local hospitality businesses. Needless to say, GBSC members also very much appreciate the facilities in the new Training and Operations Center (TOC) and look forward to being able to lodge there in the future.
