The first graduate from Framingham State University actually didn't attend FSU! 🤟🏫

Mary Swift, class of 1840, graduated from Lexington Normal School (now FSU). She was a member of the first class of the first state normal school in the country.

After graduating, Swift went to the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind to teach. One of her students was Laura Bridgman, famously known for being blind, deaf, and mute. Swift communicated with Bridgman through "finger talk," spelling words into each other's hands to teach arithmetic, colors, speech, and gender differences!

Similarly, Swift had previously interacted with Ragnhild Kaata, a deaf and blind woman in Norway who learned to communicate orally. Hearing about Kaata's success inspired Helen Keller to push herself to learn how to speak, leading Swift to teach Helen Keller basic speech and articulation at the Perkins Institution.

Mary Swift's work helped shape the way we think about communication and learning, leaving a lasting legacy that still inspires students today.
