Paul T. Murphy Memorial Scholarship

Paul T. Murphy Memorial Scholarship The Paul T. Murphy Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding Communication Arts student and campus leader at Framingham State University.

Murphy Memorial Scholarship was established by the Class of 1986 in memory of Paul, who passed away in the winter of his senior year at Framingham State. A Communication Arts major and president of his class, Paul was an advocate, a fixture on the Framingham State campus, a tremendous fan of U2, and a lousy golfer, which led to the Murphy family hosting a golf tournament in his honor for 21 years.

30 years on from his passing, we remember Paul as a quick wit with an understated yet unmistakable presence, with a smile that would light up a room, and as a loyal friend who touched the lives of everyone who knew him. The scholarship has been funded entirely by generous donations from Framingham state alumni, families, and friends. In the 30 years since the scholarship's inception, the Paul Murphy Scholarship Fund has been able to award 48 Framingham State students with over $76,000 in scholarship money for their education. To continue funding the scholarship and Paul's legacy, we ask that you consider making a donation using the Donate Now button at the top of this page. Thank you for your generosity.

Zoe Coburn, Class of 2016:

Having been a recipient of the Paul T. Murphy Scholarship has helped me tremendously with affording school and I’m extremely grateful to have received it for the past three years. Being offered this generous scholarship for three years has helped me not only afford school but also realize the power of helping others. As a first generation college student, I have wanted to help others attend college.

Upon graduating from Framingham State in January, I have been working at Mount Ida College as an Admissions Counselor helping students and families learn about the college and the admissions process. On a daily basis, I work with students and families, informing them about opportunities at Mount Ida and guiding them in the admissions processes as well as helping them transition into the college environment. Upon entering my senior year at Framingham State, I knew that I wanted to work in higher education. During my time at Framingham State I worked in the Admissions Office as a Student Admissions Representative (SAR) where I used the skills as a Communications major on a daily.

With my past experience as an SAR I was able to transition smoothly into working full-time as an Admissions Counselor. My background as a Communication Arts major has helped me when communicating with students and families about the school and what we have to offer, but also allowing me to be extremely relatable and personable.

“My advice is make your future what it’s going to be. Go out and do it.”

Erin (Espie) Underhill, graduated from FSU in 2000, and had a job secured before she even walked across the stage and accepted her diploma.

She has been working at the same company, Meditech, ever since.

As a communication arts major in school, she focused on photography and felt the major opened many options for her. “I wanted to be a Comm Arts major because it set me up for anything,” she said. “I went with a more 9-to-5 job. That’s the path I took.”

At Meditech, Erin has worked as a supervisor for years, but is now serving as a senior application specialist.

She said the shift from product development to a more customer-oriented role was a surprise opportunity, but added she feels lucky to be where she is now. The new job’s schedule works well with that of raising her family.

At FSU, Erin was a recipient of the Paul T. Murphy Scholarship in 1998 for showing student leadership and representing the Communication Arts major. She was involved in SGA, serving as secretary her sophomore year and vice president her junior year. She also worked on the resident’s life staff as well as an emerging program for students from Japan who came to FSU.

“I was very, very active on campus,” she said, adding that the skills she learned in those roles helped prepare her to be the professional she is now. “When I graduated, I had no résumé. I had to sell myself with my skills,” she said.

Erin encourages college students to search for scholarship opportunities, because the Paul T. Murphy Scholarship, along with the other ones she applied for, has allowed Erin to pay off all of her student loans years before her peers.

“I just want to say I’m very thankful for my experiences at FSU and the scholarships I was awarded, because they have helped me get to where I am today and I’m very fortunate in my career path.”
