What Happens at a Relay Event

There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below:

Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also rec

ognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Relay For Life is nine days away and we invite everyone to come to Rushford ad take part in all the activities. The community supper starts at 5 pm and if you want more to eat during the night some teams will be selling food at their team sites starting at 8pm. Opening ceremony starts at 6 with recognition of survivors and teams and survivors walking the first lap.

Shirts are all folded and sorted for this years relay. Relay will be on July 13th in Rushford. The day starts with the survivor tea at 4 pm at Rushford Lutheran Church and opening ceremony at 6pm at the depot in downtown Rushford. The community supper will be at the American Legion from 5 to 8 pm and the lumimaria ceremony is at 9:30 pm. Music, games and food sales from team campsites all night long until 2 am Saturday. We welcome everyone to join us to Celebrate, Remember an Fight Back.

Team captain meeting coming up on April 17th at 6pm at Rushford Lutheran Church. If you have a team or would like to start a team for this years relay in Rushford on July 13th please join us. We are looking for more teams for this years relay.
