After every camp, we do a post camp gear check. This article was taken from the Scoutmaster Minute:
“Respect - Troop Gear and the Scout
Every tent, stove, rope, lantern, and trailer in our troop tells a story. They’ve been carried through rainstorms, campouts, hikes, and adventures by Scouts who came before you, and someday, future Scouts will use that same gear after you’re gone.
Taking care of Troop gear isn’t just about equipment. It’s about respect.
Respect for the Scouts who worked to earn the money to buy it.
Respect for the people who will use it next.
Respect for yourselves, because responsible Scouts leave things better than they found them.
A dirty pot, a wet tent packed away, or a broken tool left unfixed may seem small today, but small things become big problems later. Leadership often shows up in the little things;
Cleaning the stove properly,
Rolling ropes neatly,
Checking gear before putting it away,
Making sure the next Scout is set up for success.
A Scout is Trustworthy and Thrifty. Taking care of troop gear is one simple way we live those words every time we camp.
Every tent, stove, rope, lantern, and trailer in our troop tells a story. They’ve been carried through rainstorms, campouts, hikes, and adventures by Scouts who came before you. Someday, future Scouts will use that same gear after you’re gone.
Give them the same opportunity you've had, trusted and tested gear that is proven and taken care of. The ultimate step to success.”
